Jimmy Kimmel’s wife, Molly McNearney, revealed whether she would like to see the talk show host wrap up his late-night era and ride off into the sunset. In recent months, several talk shows have bid farewell to their audiences. Sherri and Karamo were among the shows canceled and aired their final seasons this year, while The Kelly Clarkson Show will also end after an incredible 7-year run. 

It seems a similar question has crossed McNearney’s mind now that Jimmy Kimmel Live! is in its 24th season. The 48-year-old, who serves as a co-head writer and executive producer on the show, opened up about her opinion on Kimmel’s potential retirement from the late-night TV show.

Molly McNearney recently appeared on the latest episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, where she revealed that she has thought about her husband Jimmy Kimmel’s retirement. She admitted that it is something she would like to see happen. McNearney went on to explain that Kimmel has been working hard for several years and said that he is in a position where he has his hands full with multiple responsibilities.

“It definitely appeals to me for the nervous system of the household,” she said.

This comes after the show’s brief cancellation last September. The writer further explained on the podcast that she understands how important Kimmel’s show has become to its audience. She admitted that while she loves working on the show and appreciates the people involved, Kimmel’s impact on the program is significant by giving hope to people.

“And I feel this sense of desire to not quit because I think what he’s doing is incredibly important right now,”  McNearney further added. 

As for her own career, the writer added that she would be happy to end the show and move on to the next chapter. Meanwhile, Kimmel does not seem interested in ending the show unless he is fully prepared to do so. He pointed out that many hosts of big shows have admitted to wanting to end their programs, only to return later for a "lesser" comeback.

That’s always a bummer. And I always look at that and go, ‘Oh, is that going to be me?'"

Kimmel also admitted yet another fear related to the end of Stephen Colbert’s show. 

During the podcast, Jimmy Kimmel spoke about The Late Show with Stephen Colbert's end after 11 seasons on CBS. Although it was his rival show, Kimmel maintained a great relationship with Colbert. He admitted that he was upset by the sudden end of the much-beloved program. 

"I feel a little bit defeated by it," he said. "In a lot of ways, I feel like I’m looking at my own future."

Kimmel also appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert during its final week. He was joined by John Oliver, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers for the episode, where they paid tribute to Colbert and his incredible run on the show. With Kimmel and his wife seemingly torn between two different futures for the show, uncertainty now hangs over its future.
