Humans’ fascination with the prehistoric world and dinosaurs has long inspired unforgettable stories in popular culture, sometimes as friendly and at other times as terrifying monsters. Yet documentaries have helped explore them in a far more scientific way. Projects like Dinosaur Planet and Allosaurus: A Walking with Dinosaurs Special present these ancient animals as incredible living beings that once roamed the Earth before they vanished, leaving behind traces for humans to study today.

Over the years, several such documentaries have been created, but among the most famous remains Walking with Dinosaurs. Informative and visually groundbreaking, the series has plenty to offer.

Walking with Dinosaurs is a miniseries produced by the BBC Science Unit that first premiered in 1999. Created by Tim Haines, the show followed dinosaurs in a traditional documentary-style format. It brilliantly used CGI combined with live-action footage shot at various locations to bring prehistoric creatures to life across six episodes, each running around 30 minutes.

The original series is currently available to watch on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. This was followed by another nature documentary television miniseries with the same title, Walking with Dinosaurs, which was released in 2025. This latest documentary is available to watch on the BBC alongside purchasing options on Prime Video.

Once again, produced by the BBC Studios Science Unit, it is also a six-part series focusing on dinosaurs and has been praised for its improved CGI and visual storytelling. Although it is said to be related to the earlier Walking with Dinosaurs series, the newest series does not feature any returning members from the original production team. While the first original version is narrated by Kenneth Branagh and later replaced by Avery Brooks, the newest version is narrated by Bertie Carvel.

The Dinosaurs makes strong debut on Netflix

The Dinosaurs documentary on Netflix taps into the same human fascination with dinosaurs and the prehistoric world. Released on March 6, 2026, the series has already received an impressive 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and currently holds a 7.6 rating on IMDb. Much of the excitement surrounding the show comes not only from its compelling storytelling and stunning visuals but also from the remarkable talent held by its visionary creator, Dan Tapster, and helmer, Nick Shoolingin-Jordan, among others.

The project is executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, leading to the show's very Jurassic Park-themed success across ratings. Moreover, the documentary is narrated by the legendary Morgan Freeman. With such a strong creative team and early ratings, the series appears to have the potential to become big, perhaps as big as Walking with Dinosaurs.
