Is There a Part 2 to 'Michael?' Everything We Know About the Michael Jackson Biopic Sequel

Even before Michael’s release, there was already chatter about a possible sequel. Many claimed that a single film may not be enough to cover Michael Jackson’s larger-than-life persona and decades-spanning career. At the same time, the idea of a biopic getting a sequel remains largely unheard of. As of now, there has been no official confirmation of a follow-up to the biopic.

But now that the film has finally arrived in theaters, the narrative may have left a subtle hint for a potential sequel.

One of the biggest hints could lie in how the biopic, Michael, wraps up. The biopic primarily concludes around 1984, around Jackson’s Victory Tour, with him announcing that this will be the Jacksons’ final performance together. Then, it takes a jump directly to the 1988 Bad tour. Moreover, after the screen fades to black, the words “His story continues” appear.

This ambiguous note could carry multiple meanings. It may reference his later work, including the HIStory, or subtly hint at the possibility of a sequel. Earlier, Lionsgate had suggested that if the film performs well at the box office, a follow-up could be on the table.

“While we're not yet ready to confirm plans for a second film, I can tell you that the creative team is hard at work making sure that we're in a position to deliver more Michael soon after we release the first film," they said.

While there are certainly plenty of hints, the film’s current box office success also points toward the possibility of a sequel.

Michael makes massive numbers at the box office.

The biopic Michael has reportedly pulled in around $97 million during its domestic opening weekend and continues to climb at the box office. It has already emerged as one of the biggest musical releases, surpassing films like Bohemian Rhapsody and Straight Outta Compton. And the movie has already surpassed notable movies in its opening day earnings.

This kind of commercial success significantly strengthens the case for a sequel, especially for Lionsgate, which could look to further explore the legacy of Michael Jackson on the big screen. Amid the speculation, Jaafar Jackson mentioned in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that a sequel is already in the "works." And that has further fueled expectations that the story might continue on screen. However, as of now, fans can only await an announcement of the movie.
