Janet Jackson is yet another musical talent from the Jackson family. Much like her siblings, including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson worked hard to carve out her own space and make a name for herself in the industry. She starred in several shows and films while at the same time balancing a successful music career with hit albums such as 'Control' and Janet Jackson’s 'Rhythm Nation 1814,' among many others.
But her life and career as a singer and actress were not without hardships and challenges, which explains the curiosity about whether there is a documentary that gives a closer look at her trials and tribulations and journey to success.

There is indeed a documentary based on Janet Jackson’s life and career, showing how she overcame numerous challenges to rise to the top. Titled Janet Jackson, it is a four-part limited documentary series that originally aired on January 28, 2022.
It premiered on Lifetime and A&E in the United States, and on Sky Documentaries in the United Kingdom. As of 2026, the documentary is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Both Janet and her brother, Randy Jackson, served as producers on the project. Directed by Benjamin Hirsch, the documentary was a major event for Lifetime and A&E Networks, which later approved a follow-up titled Janet Jackson: Family First.
While there is no official release date for the follow-up, filming had reportedly already begun in 2023. The new documentary is expected to follow the singer and actress during her 2023 Together Again Tour, as well as her efforts with Randy Jackson to reunite the family band. Although it has yet to be released, Janet was also expected to participate in the upcoming biopic Michael about her brother Michael Jackson.
However, she is reportedly absent from the film amid several controversies.
Janet Jackson is absent from Michael
The much-anticipated biopic Michael, which stars Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson and has his son Prince Jackson as a producer, does not include Janet Jackson. This came as a surprising aspect of the film. During the Los Angeles premiere, La Toya Jackson shared that Janet Jackson had politely declined to be part of it.
“She was asked and she kindly declined,” La Toya said. “So you have to respect her wishes.”
“I wish everybody was in the movie," she further added.
