Over the last few years, different versions of Spider-Man have appeared on screen, each offering a new perspective on what it means to be an outcast. Different actors have brought new and refreshing interpretations to the character, reflecting new ideas and perspectives. This has also sparked curiosity about whether there is an alternate version of the character who is gay in the comics or movies. 

The question attracted even more attention after Andrew Garfield, who played Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man films, suggested that his version of the character should be allowed to explore his s********. Interestingly, he even had a potential actor in mind to play the love interest. While his idea was never realized on screen, it raises another question about whether there is any gay Spider-Man in other Marvel movies or comics.

Marvel movies have yet to explore a gay Spider-Man on screen. However, the comics introduced a gay male Spider-Man named Web-Weaver. Web-Weaver is the alternate-universe identity of Cooper Coen, who first appeared in Edge of Spider-Verse #5 (2022). He became the first gay male Spider-Man character in Marvel Comics. 

  This came several years after Andrew Garfield suggested a similar idea for his version of the character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

 In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the actor said he had spoken with producer Matt Tolmach about the possibility of Spider-Man exploring his s********. He asked what would happen if Mary Jane were a man in the film. 

“And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’" he said. "It’s hardly even groundbreaking!”

Garfield initially presented the idea as a joke. However, he appeared interested in exploring options. The actor even had someone in mind for the role, suggesting that Michael B. Jordan could play Spider-Man's potential male love interest.

That interest in experimenting with Marvel characters has stayed with Garfield, who recently revealed that he has one unusual condition if he were ever to return to Marvel as Spider-Man. 

While Tom Holland is the current Spider-Man in the franchise, many fans still hope to see Andrew Garfield put on the Spider-Man suit again. During an appearance on The Discourse podcast with Mike DeAngelo, the actor was asked what could convince him to return to the Spider-Man movies. Garfield was quick to point out that Marvel would have to come up with a weird and unexpected new story.

He even suggested that the movie could be a Spider-Man road trip. Although there is no official confirmation on whether he would return, the actor remained open to exploring different possibilities for the character. Whether these new versions from the comics will eventually make it to the screen, however, remains to be seen.
