It is not about whether ghosts are real, but rather whether they helped solve a case. The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story brings a chilling story about a pet cemetery owner who suddenly disappeared in 1985. Nearly a month later, her body was found in the Mississippi River on May 2, 1985, and the cause of her death was asphyxiation.

The case remained cold for several years due to a lack of evidence. However, it was reopened when new witnesses came forward with what they knew, including claims of ghost encounters. This is the focus of the three-part series, which was released on October 11, 2026.

But is this based on a real story?

Is The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story real?

Yes, The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story is based on a true story. The three-part docuseries follows the case of the disappearance of Azalea Original Pet Cemetery owner Dorothy Thompson, whose body was found in chains in the Mississippi River. Detectives had doubts regarding her cemetery groundskeeper, Brandon Nodier, and her friend Patricia Newman, who was the victim’s power of attorney and executor of her estate.

But there was not enough evidence. Later, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 wiped out many important documents related to the case. It remained that way until witnesses began contacting authorities with information, and some even claimed that they encountered Thompson’s ghost. One witness added that Thompson’s ghost appeared in front of them, wrapped in chains.

And many of the claims pointed to the groundskeeper, Brandon Nodier. As Newman shared in the docuseries, Thompson and Nodier's legal battle began after she had agreed to sell her cemetery to Nodier for $20,000. Thompson sued Nodier, accusing him of making her sign the papers under pretenses.

With Nodier coming back into the center of the case, the focus turned to what happened to him and whether Thompson finally got justice.

What happened to Brandon Nodier in The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story?

More than one witness alleged Brandon Nodier's involvement in the case. One of the witnesses who reached out to authorities claimed that they saw Brandon Nodier choke and murder Dorothy Thompson. And after the witness’s testimony before the grand jury, Nodier was arrested in 2012 and booked on a charge of second-degree murder.

He later pleaded guilty to manslaughter in July 2014 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. This finally led to the closing of a case that had remained unsolved for several years. This is certainly one of the must-watch documentaries to follow this year.
