The DCU has started leaving clues in places fans never expected. Lanterns looked like a grounded m***** mystery built around Hal Jordan and John Stewart, yet its Nebraska setting has quietly opened a door to Gotham City. Sheriff Kerry Kane, played by Kelly Macdonald, seemed designed as a local obstacle in Rushville.

Then the series revealed that Kerry is actually from Gotham, while an earlier exchange had her asking someone to “tell Barb” she said hello. Suddenly, one surname and two small details became the center of a much bigger theory.

Could Kerry Kane be part of Kate Kane’s family, and could Lanterns be quietly introducing the DCU’s Batwoman?

Episode 2 of Lanterns revealed that Kerry moved to Rushville from Gotham “on a whim.” The revelation surprised Macdonald herself, who told Entertainment Weekly that discovering the Gotham connection felt like “finding out you’re a Disney princess.”

The mystery deepened because Kerry had already mentioned “Barb” during a phone call in Episode 1. Forbes and ComicBook.com noted that the name could refer to Barbara Gordon, whose connection to Gotham’s police family and eventual Batgirl identity makes the reference especially interesting.

Then comes the Kane surname. DC identifies Kate Kane as Batwoman, a Gotham hero and Bruce Wayne’s cousin. That makes a Gotham-born character named Kerry Kane an obvious source of speculation. Still, Lanterns has never stated that Kerry belongs to Kate’s family. There is currently no official announcement connecting Macdonald’s character to Batwoman.

The Gotham clues are real. The family connection remains a theory, and the DCU’s broader Batman plans make the speculation even more fascinating.

James Gunn and Peter Safran designed the DCU as a connected universe where characters can cross between projects. Their original DC Studios plan also confirmed The Brave and the Bold as the franchise’s new Batman film, with Damian Wayne as Robin and other members of the extended Bat-Family expected to appear.

That framework leaves room for Kate Kane to enter the universe eventually, but it does not confirm her arrival in Lanterns. The series has already shown how its grounded story can widen the DCU through Gotham references without turning the mystery into a Batman show. DC’s own coverage describes Kerry as the Rushville sheriff dealing with Hal Jordan and John Stewart, while Macdonald has confirmed that Kerry’s Gotham background is part of the character’s story.

There is another reason to remain cautious. DC currently has a dedicated Batwoman comic starring Kate Kane, but that does not establish a live-action DCU appearance. So, is Kerry secretly Kate Kane’s relative? The evidence creates a compelling possibility, but nothing has been confirmed. Lanterns has planted the clue. The DCU will have to reveal what the Kane name really means.
