Is James Gunn’s Adria Arjona Secret a Lose-Lose Cause Now?

When Victor Frankenstein tried to infuse a spark of being into a stitched-up pile of carcasses, he probably would have assumed he was going to stun the world with his creation, that he was going to achieve what humans can only dream of - imparting the gift of life. However, he ended up creating a monster instead - a creature that became the very reason for his demise. Believe it or not, James Gunn is also in a similar situation.

Now, the comparison may seem to be an exaggeration at first, but as we discuss how this Adria Arjona secret is the Superman director’s Frankenstein’s Monster, the analogy will become more and more fitting for the fiasco. James Gunn might not have intended it, but he has given life to a storm that could very well become the Kryptonite to his Man of Tomorrow.

The surprise reveal of Adria Arjona’s secret character, which Gunn intended to have the ultimate cinematic payoff in the theaters, is not only rendered ineffective but has now turned into a ticking time bomb for the Man of Tomorrow marketing. But first, one has to understand what triggered this unwanted crisis in the first place.

The genesis of James Gunn’s Adria Arjona problem

For months now, fans have been hearing rumors and discourse around Adria Arjona’s secret role in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow being that of Wonder Woman. It has gotten to a point where Gunn himself has now jumped in to put out the fires caused by this simple mystery. But how did it all start?

With a simple Instagram follow in mid 2025, of course, when fans noticed that the DC co-head had followed the actress on the social media platform. They swiftly jumped to the conclusion that there is a major casting announcement waiting to come. Some were even tinkering with the idea that she might be DC’s next Wonder Woman.

However, things became more intense when James Gunn had to address these rumors head-on during an interview, where he tried to downplay the Instagram follow, but ended up commenting that she would be a great Wonder Woman. This was followed by Arjona’s casting in the Superman sequel in a secret role, which kind of convinced the fans that she is playing Wonder Woman in Man of Tomorrow.

Since that time, there have been other rumors and insider reports that Arjona's secret character could potentially be the alien queen Maxima. But most of the fans are still sold on the Wonder Woman gig based on Gunn’s comments and whatever tease Arjona has been providing regarding her physical training and the character costume.

And this was all fun and games until the point when actor Frank Grillo posted a fan-made poster of the Man of Tomorrow cast, also featuring the Onslaught actress as Wonder Woman. This was when Gunn personally stepped in to fight the now fiercely intensified rumors, reasoning that Grillo has no inside information on the character Arjona is playing in the movie, and even posted a screenshot of his conversation with the actor, where Grillo seems to be apologizing for the post.

However, neither the actor’s apology nor the director’s explanation has done much for damage control here, as they do not provide a definitive answer to the query: Is Adria Arjona really playing Wonder Woman? The rumors still rage high, and it only creates a deafening echo chamber now where the rumors are almost making people believe that Arjona is actually Wonder Woman.

Adria Arjona Bets $500 on the Wonder Woman Question as ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Rumors Swirl

This leaves only two scenarios for the DC head, and both of them present a losing cause.

Scenario A: Adria Arjona is playing Maxima or some other character

After such a build-up around Adria Arjona portraying an original flagship DC hero, one of the foundational “Trinity” pillars of the DC Universe alongside Superman and Batman, if she turned out to be any other character, including Maxima, it would only and only result in a letdown. Fans have literally spent months building up expectations of finally seeing a new rendition of Wonder Woman, and that too alongside Superman. This would be like serving a slice of bread to a man expecting pizza.

If the final cut reveals a minor villainous turn or a fleeting cameo rather than a marquee DCU centerpiece, the reveal is bound to feel like a bigger letdown. Audiences accustomed to high-stakes franchise anchoring may feel that the studio's deliberate cloud of secrecy misled them into expecting a much larger narrative footprint. Plus, there are hardly any female characters in the DC lore that can compete with the aura of Wonder Woman, and an audience expecting the Princess of the Amazons would never settle for less.

So, it might seem that the only win in this scenario would be if Arjona does appear on the screen donning the Bracelets of Submission and Lasso of Truth, but that is not quite so.

Scenario B: She actually is Wonder Woman

If co-CEO James Gunn is playing a high-stakes game of creative misdirection and Adria Arjona is secretly donning the Lasso of Truth as Diana Prince, the studio's defensive strategy has already cracked under the weight of internet sleuthing. The surprise that Gunn fought so hard to keep, expecting a theatrical spectacle, is already out and blown.

Moreover, Gunn's recent post on Threads that forcefully squashed the mounting speculation, explicitly clarifying that Frank Grillo had zero inside information, kind of cautioned the fandom that people were making "way too much of this." By issuing such a definitive pushback, the creative head actively painted himself into a corner to protect the surprise.

If Arjona is ultimately unveiled as the new Amazonian princess, it means leadership deliberately misled the fan base rather than simply deflecting. That kind of outright deception risks burning the goodwill Gunn has carefully cultivated through his signature transparent, direct-to-consumer social media communication style, turning what should be a triumphant superhero casting announcement into a flashpoint for fan frustration over broken trust.

This can prove to be extremely detrimental to the movie as well, in ways that are unimaginable.

Man of Tomorrow might be set up for a massive implosion

We are already at a stage where the marketing of the film has not even begun, and it already has this massive buzz all around it. Unfortunately, this buzz only becomes the reason that sets Man of Tomorrow up for failure. In essence, the buzz is only around a single thing: Is Adria Arjona playing Wonder Woman? And many people already believe that, which directly sets the audience up for a letdown in both scenarios discussed above.

And the frustrating part for DC should be that it is not even the central focus of the movie. The movie is most probably not meant just to introduce Adria Arjona’s character but to build on Superman’s story in the new DCU world. The main plot point is the Kryptonian joining forces with Lex Luthor to fight Brainiac in the sequel, and that is exactly what should be the central focus of all the discussions around the project.

There is even a major casting update regarding Matthew Lillard coming on board in a secret role, which is getting little to no traction on the internet. It is as if the movie exists inside a giant bubble of speculation floating high in the sky, awaiting to fall hard once the pin of reality pierces it. If audiences enter the theaters carrying this kind of expectation, they might as well not remember what the movie actually caters to - the story of Superman.

Therefore, what James Gunn might have started as a marketing gimmick has now become the very thing that might kill the entire marketing of the film. Hence, the Frankenstein’s Monster analogy at the very beginning, if you remember. However, all is not lost, not yet. There is still time in the marketing campaign for the movie to commence, and there might be some clever ways to reclaim the whole narrative and spin it around the main character of the story - Superman.

From now on, James Gunn and the DC team need to be extra careful about what they put out there regarding the film. Superman was a good movie and much like a reprieve for a seemingly done-for DC Studios. The studio would very much like to continue with its stroke of luck with the franchise, and for that, they need to handle this Adria Arjona crisis in a way that ensures the character reveal does not hamper the overall reception to the movie.
