Sir Ian McKellen has spent more than six decades proving that great acting is more of a lifelong craft. From commanding Shakespearean stages with the Royal Shakespeare Company to becoming the definitive Gandalf and Magneto for a generation of moviegoers. Along the way, his warm friendship and playful banter with fellow knight of the stage Sir Patrick Stewart have become almost as beloved as the characters they portray, creating one of entertainment's most enduring off-screen partnerships.

Yet for all the attention surrounding his legendary career, audiences remain fascinated by a far more personal question, and it concerns the identity of Ian McKellen's better half.

The simple answer is no. Sir Ian McKellen is not married and does not currently have a partner. The 87-year-old actor, who publicly came out as gay in 1988 and became one of Britain's most prominent LGBTQ+ voices, has long embraced an independent lifestyle. His most recent relationship, with actor Oscar Conlon-Morrey, reportedly ended in early 2024.

That does not mean his life has been without profound relationships. Among his most significant partnerships were teacher Brian Taylor, with whom he shared eight years between 1964 and 1972, and acclaimed director Sean Mathias, his partner from 1978 to 1988. Even after their romantic relationship ended, McKellen and Mathias remained close friends and creative collaborators, a testament to the actor's belief that meaningful connections need not fit traditional definitions.

A man who once portrayed kings, wizards, and mutant revolutionaries now seems increasingly interested in stories about connection, legacy, and chosen family. In many ways, those themes mirror his own life.

Another question currently dominating fan discussions concerns his long-awaited return to Marvel. After years of speculation, Magneto is finally stepping back into the spotlight.

Magneto returns in Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel has officially confirmed that Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Erik Lehnsherr, better known as Magneto, in Avengers: Doomsday. The film reunites him with Patrick Stewart's Professor Charles Xavier and several other actors from the original X-Men films, creating one of the most significant multiverse crossovers attempted by Marvel Studios. Although plot details remain closely guarded, McKellen recently revealed that he filmed a major destruction sequence as Magneto.

Speaking at a public appearance in Rome, the actor described channeling intense emotion while performing the scene, suggesting that Magneto will once again wield the immense power that made him one of Marvel's most compelling antagonists and antiheroes. The Russo Brothers are directing the film, which also features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom alongside a sprawling ensemble drawn from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

His return in Avengers: Doomsday extends one of the longest live-action runs for any Marvel character on screen. Whether discussing love, friendship, family, or superheroes, Ian McKellen continues to challenge expectations. At 87, he remains a towering figure whose influence extends far beyond the stage and screen.
