Gone With the Wind is one of the most talked-about Hollywood epics of the 1930s. Directed by Victor Fleming, the historical romance became a massive success, winning eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Vivien Leigh won the Oscar for Best Actress, while Hattie McDaniel made history as the first African American to win an Academy Award for her performance in the film for Best Supporting Actress.

Decades later, Gone With the Wind continues to spark discussion and debate, as seen with its latest Netflix controversy. But is the movie available to watch online now in 2026?

Unfortunately, Gone With the Wind is not available to stream online on Netflix or any other major platforms. However, the movie can be rented on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.  Even after several decades, the film with its massive box office collection of approximately $3.4 billion to $4.5 billion, considering both the original and the re-release, is considered to be one of the most successful movies of all time.

In 1989, the film was among the first 25 movies selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. The movie follows a Southern belle, Scarlett O'Hara, who struggles to save her family's plantation, Tara, while trying to find love during the American Civil War and Reconstruction era. Based on Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel of the same name, the film was released in 1939. It became a massive critical and commercial success upon its release.

Although a classic, the movie recently garnered a new wave of traction after it arrived on Netflix. The description of the movie was called out as inappropriate by many. Users noticed that the description for Gone with the Wind described the 1939 classic as "known for its racism."

“A 1939 American Civil War epic known for its racism. To learn more about Black lives in America, search ’Black Lives Matter,'" the statement read.

The description quickly drew criticism, and Elon Musk was one of the critics who called out the wording as inappropriate. Netflix later removed the description without an explanation, so it is no longer on the Netflix July list. As many pointed out, whether it is for the story or performances, the movie has always sparked discussions and debate.
