In the realm of Hollywood, comfort rarely equates to true comfort, as it is within the realms of differentiation that the true potency of talent flourishes. This understanding is well grasped by Cillian Murphy, whose versatility spans across genres, from sci-fi thrillers to period dramas and horror spectacles. Notably, in 2002, the Oscar-winning actor left an indelible mark with a sci-fi horror film that captivated audiences with its unique storyline.

Fast forward nearly 22 years, and discussions are underway among the creators for a sequel to this memorable hit. However, the burning question remains: will Murphy reprise his role as the leading man in this anticipated sequel?

Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, after a hiatus of two decades, have joined forces once again to helm and pen a two-part sequel to 28 Days Later, featuring Cillian Murphy, under the title 28 Years Later. Considering the significance of the original film in Murphy's career trajectory, speculation about his reprisal of the lead role has been rife since discussions began. However, there has been no green light regarding Murphy's definite return for 28 Years Later till now.

With the film's production slated for May, however, the unveiling of cast members will be out imminently. Murphy's involvement as an executive producer in the project bolsters the likelihood of his return for the sequel since just months ago, his contribution to discussions regarding the preferred ending for 28 Days Later elevated him to the status of a feminist icon. Additionally, his recent appearance on Josh Horowitz's Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, during which he refrained from completely ruling out his return, strengthens the speculation surrounding his reprisal, despite the absence of formal confirmation.

Just recently, Daniel Richtman reported that Jodie Comer has been in the talks to take the lead in the upcoming 28 Years Later, the follow-up to 28 Days Later starring Cillian Murphy. The actress is famous for her roles in Killing Eve, Free Guy, The Last Duel, Help, and The Bikeriders. Since 28 Years Later is presently known to be the first of the 2 films set to continue the plotline of the 2002 zombie thriller, 28 Days Later, her taking the role for the second half also seems plausible.

Given that Sony landed this deal, this new trilogy could reinvigorate the zombie genre easily. With a budget of $60 million and the possibility of Cillian Murphy taking the lead in this trilogy, this could really become Sony’s biggest bet in a while. And with Comer ticking the list of the soon-to-be-revealed cast, it is safe to say that the makers will live up to its name as it had in the 2002 film.
