Unfortunately, the sci-fi horror, Alien: Romulus, has not landed on the streaming giant, despite plenty of fan speculation. This is the seventh installment in the series directed by Fede Alvarez. Its Best Visual Effects were even nominated for the 2025 Academy Awards.

But rest assured, the film starring Cailee Spaeny is currently available to watch on Amazon Prime. Written by Rodo Sayagues, Alien: Romulus follows a young miner, Rain Carradine, desperate to escape a dead-end colony run by Weyland-Yutani.

She and a small group of fellow colonists hijack a ship to scavenge an abandoned space station for cryosleep tech, hoping it will get them to a better planet. Naturally, things go wrong fast. The station is not empty, and what is lurking inside is not just one xenomorph but the horrifying result of reckless experimentation.

And yes, a sequel is officially on the way. However, the next chapter promises a massive shift in direction.

Fede Álvarez will not return for the sequel movie

Fede Álvarez, who directed 2024’s Alien: Romulus, was a crucial part of the movie. However, he has confirmed that he will not return as director for the film’s sequel. Fede Álvarez revealed that the sequel’s script has been completed and that he will stay involved as a producer alongside franchise creator Ridley Scott.

“I’m going to pass the torch on this one as director,” he told TooFab.

Moreover, he described the move as a deliberate passing of the baton rather than a creative departure. Fede Álvarez explained that stepping aside as director aligns with the long-standing tradition of the Alien franchise, and pointed out that, aside from Ridley Scott, most filmmakers in the franchise have only made one Alien film before handing it off to someone new. Now, both Fede Álvarez and Ridley Scott are actively searching for a new filmmaker to take over directing duties.

The sequel is already in development, even as Fede Álvarez takes a step back from his role as a director. As the tradition suggests, the film will find a new direction under a new leader, but whether it can keep up the expectations set by Alien: Romulus remains to be seen. Until then, all the eyes will be on Alien: Earth.
