Aidan Gillen and Alex Murphy have been roped in for a biopic on the sports betting giant, Paddy Power. Long before algorithmic marketing and boundary-pushing campaigns became the norm for modern corporate disruption, a tight-knit circle of Dublin risk-takers set out to completely redefine the global betting landscape. Armed with relentless cheek, controversial advertising strategies, and a willingness to gamble on the absurd, they transformed a local bookmaking operation into a multi-billion-dollar international powerhouse.
But behind the headline-grabbing stunts and massive financial windfall lay a much darker, high-stakes human cost - one that exposed the devastating grip of widespread gambling addiction across the globe. Now, that wild, unapologetically Irish origin story is making the jump to the big screen.
Paddy Power biopic ropes in a brilliant cast
Playhouse Studios is breaking ground on its debut scripted feature film by turning Aaron Rogan’s acclaimed investigative exposé, Punters: How Paddy Power Bet Billions and Changed Gambling Forever, into a major motion picture. To bring the turbulent, high-stakes corporate history of Dublin's most notorious bookmaker to life, the production has locked down a formidable ensemble cast featuring Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones), Colm Meaney (Layer Cake), Brian Gleeson (Logan Lucky), and Alex Murphy (The Young Offenders), as reported by Variety.
Directorial duties will be handled by Matt Lipsey (Ted Lasso), working from a screenplay crafted by the writing teams of Dale Longmore, John Quinn, and Brian Durnin. Rather than framing the project as a standard corporate success story, the cinematic adaptation digs deep into the darker consequences of the brand's meteoric ascent.

The narrative exposes how a tight-knit circle of risk-takers utilized aggressive, envelope-pushing marketing to mainstream global online betting. They simultaneously laid bare the devastating, long-term human toll of widespread addiction to the so-called sport that left hundreds of thousands of lives permanently fractured in its wake, per Variety.
The upcoming film is actually a very important project for Playhouse, as the production house eyes an expansion.
Playhouse attempting a massive market capture
Playhouse is rapidly scaling into a comprehensive, end-to-end entertainment powerhouse, streamlining development, funding, physical shooting, and post-production under one unified umbrella spanning Ireland and the UK. As part of this aggressive structural expansion, the company recently established a London Soho post-production hub alongside a newly minted regional office in Belfast.
This momentum follows Playhouse's financial backing of Lemonade - an Underground Films and Rocliffe Productions collaboration starring Barry Keoghan, who is playing Ringo in the upcoming Beatles biopic, that celebrated its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.

Paddy Power, Derby, UK- Jan 6, 2020: Paddy Power bookmakers store front
With the green light for the Paddy Power feature film, Playhouse faces the ultimate trial by fire: proving that its robust new production infrastructure can successfully execute ambitious, prestige-level storytelling. Arriving precisely as the US betting market experiences an unprecedented gold rush, this cinematic deep-dive into the bookmaking industry serves as the definitive proving ground for the studio's scripted aspirations.
