'Invincible' Creator Reveals J.K. Simmons Was Never Supposed to Play Omni-Man at First

Robert Kirkman has revealed that J.K. Simmons was not originally cast as Omni-Man in Invincible, shedding new light on one of the show’s most iconic performances. Instead, the actor was first approached for a completely different role, one that would have placed him on the opposite side of the story’s power dynamic and drastically altered how audiences experienced the series.

The revelation offers a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes decisions that shaped the hit animated show. Simmons’ portrayal of Nolan Grayson has since become one of the defining elements of Invincible, praised for its ability to balance emotional depth with terrifying intensity.

But as Kirkman explained, that now-iconic casting only came together after Simmons read the script and made an unexpected request that shifted the entire direction of the character.

Invincible creator Robert Kirkman confirms J.K. Simmons nearly played the GDA director

J.K. Simmons was originally offered the role of Cecil Stedman in Invincible before ultimately becoming the voice of Omni-Man. Speaking on The Escape Pod podcast, Robert Kirkman revealed that the team had initially envisioned him as the calculating head of the Global Defense Agency, not the powerful Viltrumite at the center of the story.

“We sent him the script and he was like ‘I’d rather be Omni Man,’” Kirkman said, recalling how Simmons responded after reading the material.

That single pivot proved to be a turning point. The creators embraced the idea, casting J.K. Simmons as Nolan Grayson instead, while Walton Goggins ultimately stepped into the role of Cecil. The result was a near-perfect pairing on both fronts, with Simmons delivering a performance that seamlessly balances warmth, menace, and explosive intensity.

The casting decision paid off in a big way. From the early emotional beats to the now-iconic Season 1 train sequence, Simmons’ portrayal elevated Omni-Man into one of the most compelling figures in superhero television, making it almost impossible to picture anyone else in the role.

And while that unexpected switch worked out flawlessly, Kirkman’s casting ambitions for the series are far from over.

The creator’s ongoing mission to land Bryan Cranston

Even as Invincible continues to expand its universe, Robert Kirkman has another major name in his sights: Bryan Cranston. Following the conclusion of season four, the creator made it clear that landing the Emmy-winning star remains a top priority, no matter how many times he turns them down.

“We're not gonna stop offering him roles, he's not going to beat us … We're coming for you, Cranston!” Robert Kirkman told DiscussingFilm, doubling down on what has become a long-running inside joke between the production and the actor.

This persistence is not new. In fact, Kirkman has previously revealed that offering Cranston a role has turned into something of a yearly ritual, one that the actor has consistently declined so far. Despite that, Kirkman and the team remain determined to eventually bring him into the Invincible universe.

“As far as dream casting goes, I think we offer Bryan Cranston a role every season. That has become our tradition, and his tradition is that he turns us down (laughs).” Kirkman told Collider back in 2025.

The revelation that J.K. Simmons was never meant to play Omni-Man only makes his performance feel even more remarkable. What started as a different casting decision turned into one of the defining elements of Invincible, proving that sometimes the best creative choices come from unexpected turns.
