Robert Downey Jr. did not just play Tony Stark across the MCU. He became one of the franchise’s defining voices, carrying the character from Iron Man’s sharp-tongued origin story to the emotional farewell of Avengers: Endgame. Now, with Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, his reflections on the franchise feel especially timely. 

There is a reason Infinity War still feels like the cinematic equivalent of someone pulling the fire alarm and then walking away smiling.

Speaking to CBR, Robert Downey Jr. looked back at the Russo brothers’ transformation of the superhero genre, pointing to Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War as the movies that fundamentally changed the MCU’s operating system. 

“I feel is the most important one we have done so far because it was taking the superhero genre and turning it into an insaniac cliffhanger where if not for the MCU there be no hope for how you would see a brighter day,” he said. 

That phrase captures exactly why Infinity War landed like a cinematic ambush. Marvel did not simply end on a question. It ended by making the audience wonder whether the entire heroic premise had just been broken. Thanos won, half the universe disappeared, and the movie cut to black before anyone could emotionally process it.

And the Russo brothers had already rehearsed that balancing act. Civil War had essentially disguised an Avengers movie as a Captain America sequel, forcing superheroes into ideological combat while introducing Holland’s Peter Parker as a burst of youthful comic energy.

And now, years later, the MCU is once again playing with that same idea of impossible scale.

Avengers: Doomsday is already operating with an intentionally enormous question hanging over it: how exactly does Robert Downey Jr. fit into a universe where Tony Stark died saving everyone? Marvel has been emphatic that Downey Jr. is returning as Doctor Doom rather than Iron Man, while the film is bringing together Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and legacy X-Men characters. 

Then David Harbour casually dropped a line that sounded like it had escaped from the Marvel spoiler vault. During a Variety appearance, the actor was asked for a Doomsday line completely out of context. In character as Red Guardian, he delivered: “You are Tony Stark.”

That could be a genuine leak, but Marvel fandom has learned to treat these moments like evidence at a crime scene. Harbour could be trolling, referring to someone mistaking Doom for Stark, or deliberately throwing another multiverse-shaped banana peel into the conversation. The timing is particularly mischievous because the latest Doomsday footage continues to present Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom, complete with the Latverian villain’s mythology and distinctive armor. 

Downey Jr. described Infinity War as an “insaniac cliffhanger.” Doomsday may be preparing to prove that Marvel has not forgotten the recipe.
