Andrew Garfield has labeled tech billionaires’ obsession with immortality infantile and deluded. The actor plays Sam Altman in Artificial, Luca Guadagnino’s film about the founding of OpenAI, which premiered in New York. While promoting it, Garfield sat down for a chat that wandered from the walk everyone keeps mentioning to the meaning of winning and losing. Somewhere along that winding route, mortality crashed the party, and the tone changed fast.
While the internet argues over whether Altman’s walk was nailed, Garfield had a bigger target in mind, and it involves billionaires who think death is optional.

Andrew Garfield thinks tech billionaires who expect to cheat death are being childish. While discussing his movie Artificial, the interviewer found it unsettling that some of the most powerful people on Earth seem convinced they will never die. Garfield did not hold back.
“Well, it’s immature, and it’s deluded, and it’s a little adorable," Garfield said, speaking in the GQ interview.
He then added, “And it’s kind of sweet, but it’s infantile [laughs] and it’s cowardly.”

The GQ interview showed Garfield going beyond name-calling. He argued that dying is the scariest adventure anyone can take, and everyone is booked on it, whether the idea fits their plans or not. He traced the fear to a culture obsessed with ascending, then noted the irony. Younger men are steering technology without knowing its destination, which leaves everyone standing on the same threshold of not knowing.
While billionaires try to dodge death itself, Garfield faces a far more ordinary milestone that rattles him just as much.
Andrew Garfield opens up about his fear of becoming a dad
Andrew Garfield has a fear that sits much closer to home than immortality, and it is fatherhood. On Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, the actor was asked about a challenge that feels daunting. After some thought, he said that becoming a dad scares him badly, and he laughed while saying it. Even so, Garfield acknowledged it as one of the biggest and most important challenges in his life.

Fear of fatherhood is not new for him. Esquire heard it in 2024, when Garfield called himself already tired and unwilling to be a tired dad. Then came the SmartLess podcast, where he admitted being childless at 42 and not entirely proud of it. In the GQ interview, he said watching friends parent in a screen-heavy world gives him pause, though instinct keeps tugging. Billionaires shop for forever, while Garfield seems happy to make a finite life count.
