Examining the deep comic origins of the character illustrates why this role remains a landmark opportunity for the actress.

Rich Marvel comics origins and legacy iterations

First debuting in The Avengers Annual #10 back in 1981, Rogue endures as one of Marvel's most notable female heroes. Born with an X-gene, her mutant abilities allow her to absorb the life force, memories, and superpowers of anyone through physical touch. Originally introduced as a reluctant supervillain raised by Mystique, she later joined the X-Men to use her abilities for good.

Her tragic powers long prevented physical closeness, serving as both a curse and a core part of her character arc. Over decades of comic history, her dynamic storyline includes a famous romance and eventual marriage to fellow mutant Gambit. Lenore Zann famously voiced the hero in animated television series, while Anna Paquin portrayed her in 20th Century Fox's original film franchise.
