For decades, comic books have focused on superheroes and their extraordinary strength, which often seemingly had young boys as fans. That may have created the notion that the superhero world was a boys-only club, led by powerful characters like Iron Man and Thor. However, the impact of these characters and what they represent was never limited to just boys, or even one generation or country.
Iman Vellani is one of those who has openly spoken about the impact that comic books and Marvel had on her. After playing a superhero role herself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actress opened up about how meaningful these iconic superheroes were to her growing up. And while sharing her stance, she also broke Marvel's boys' club image.

"Marvel was kind of known to be more of a boys' club. But all I knew was these heroes-- I saw myself represented in Iron Man, in Thor, in Loki. The fact that they were able to make it so personal to even a Brown girl in Markham, Ontario is just the magic of these films," she said.

Vellani shared on the podcast how she felt deeply connected to the films. Now, as the Marvel fanbase continued to grow beyond its early perception as a boys-only club, greater attention was also given to characters such as Black Widow, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel. Vellani’s love for the Marvel Universe and talent also ultimately helped bring her into that world, as she took on the role of Ms. Marvel, aka Kamala Khan, a teenager from Jersey City.
But most importantly, her knowledge of the Marvel Universe was clearly something that worked in her favor.
