Speaking with Howard Stern, Nicholas Cage reflected on the decision to pass on playing the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man. When asked why he turned down the part, Cage explained that he was deeply committed to independent and artistic projects at the time.

"I'm not sorry I turned it down," he stated firmly, emphasizing that he had no regrets about prioritizing creative fulfillment over blockbuster fame.

He noted that Spike Jonze had offered him the script for Adaptation, a role he felt passionately about, and he was willing to cut his price to make it happen. Cage elaborated that he was on what he called an "art route" during that period, deliberately avoiding big-budget studio films in favor of more experimental and personal work.

"I decide I didn't want to do big movies at that time," he told Stern, acknowledging that his career trajectory was guided by artistic integrity rather than commercial success. He praised Willem Dafoe's performance, saying.
