Christopher Abbott is now headed into the Marvel machine, yet even with his casting in the upcoming X-Men, Abbott says he has not actually read the script. That is a surprisingly casual position for an actor joining one of Marvel Studios’ most closely watched projects, especially with Jake Schreier directing and a new ensemble taking shape around him.
The news also comes as Abbott appears in Netflix’s East of Eden, giving him another major role that puts his particular brand of quiet intensity front and center. For Abbott, this is hardly his first time stepping into unfamiliar territory.
His filmography has taken him from the raw emotional terrain of James White to the surreal body horror of Possessor, the military absurdity of Catch-22 and the gothic strangeness of Poor Things. Marvel is simply his biggest mainstream detour yet.

Christopher Abbott is still waiting to read the X-Men script
Christopher Abbott is not pretending to know more than he does. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he was unusually blunt about where things stand with Marvel, confirming that he has not read a script for X-Men yet.
“I am not even being coy, I have not read anything. But I am excited to work with Jake Schreier, I think he is a great director and that cast is really, really good. I cannot wait, I love the X-Men,” he said.

The comment is particularly funny coming from an actor who has built his reputation on characters who often seem to know exactly how much trouble they are in. Abbott has repeatedly gravitated toward material where the character is thrown into situations that keep shifting underneath him.
Entertainment Tonight also captured Abbott emphasizing just how little information he currently has, while making clear that his enthusiasm for the project is very real.
The timing is also telling. Abbott has spent much of his career avoiding the obvious route to movie stardom, jumping between character-driven indies, horror, literary adaptations and studio productions.
East of Eden gave Abbott a very different acting challenge
Before Marvel, Christopher Abbott has been doing the kind of work that explains why his casting is so interesting. In East of Eden, he plays Adam Trask, the wandering, morally complicated figure whose life becomes intertwined with Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames.
Netflix describes Adam as a character who has lived several different lives, changing dramatically as his circumstances and family evolve. Abbott has also spoken warmly about working with Pugh, praising the way she remains completely present in a scene.
“She is present, you know, and she is like, and she plays tennis with you and like that is all that I ever look for in another actor, just someone that is there with you in the room and being alive and present,” he said.

That instinct fits neatly with the performances that have defined his career, where tension often comes from watching people react in real time rather than delivering polished movie-star beats. It also makes his next move into X-Men even more intriguing.
Abbott is coming to Marvel with a résumé built on transformation, discomfort and characters who rarely give audiences an easy read. Now he gets to bring that sensibility into one of the most recognizable corners of superhero cinema.
