“I’m Grateful to Everyone Who Watched”: Melania Trump Celebrates ‘MELANIA’ Reaching No. 1

For a documentary, MELANIA arrived with more headlines than most feature films could dream of. The project had already been labeled the most expensive documentary ever made. So when the film finally debuted for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, the surge in views was like the inevitable second act of a carefully staged media spectacle.

Still, the numbers brought something more personal than headlines, gratitude. And for Melania Trump, that gratitude quickly found its way to social media.

Shortly after the documentary climbed to the top of the streaming charts within a week, Melania Trump shared a message with viewers on X, acknowledging the film’s early success.

“I am grateful to everyone who took the time to watch my new film, MELANIA, on Amazon Prime this week,” she wrote.

She also credited what she called the “passion and commitment” of the team behind the documentary, inviting audiences tuning in over the weekend simply to enjoy.

The timing of the message reflected a milestone moment for the film. According to streaming tracker FlixPatrol, MELANIA became the most-streamed film on the platform, and the most-streamed piece of content overall in the United States, within just one day of its streaming premiere. The documentary itself follows roughly twenty days in Melania Trump’s life during the tense weeks leading up to Donald Trump beginning his second presidential term.

In theatrical release earlier this year, the film opened to more than $7 million at the box office, the strongest opening for a non-concert documentary in over a decade before eventually making its transition to streaming.

If the streaming success confirmed public curiosity, it also revived a different conversation, the one Hollywood has been having ever since the film’s staggering budget first leaked into the trade headlines.

MELANIA: The $75 million documentary that sparked debate

If MELANIA has already reshaped the conversation around political documentaries, much of that transformation stems from the staggering amount of money behind it. Industry insiders estimate that Amazon paid roughly $75 million for the project. The price tag even drew questions directed at Amazon founder Jeff Bezos during a meeting with journalists from The Washington Post.

According to reports, staff members pressed Bezos about the costly deal and whether the purchase was politically motivated. Bezos reportedly responded that the acquisition was a “hands-off” decision and insisted he had not been personally involved in negotiating the deal.

Directed by Brett Ratner, the film’s reception has been anything but quiet. Supporters within conservative media praised the documentary enthusiastically, with former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany even suggesting it deserved Academy Award recognition.

And yet controversy, as Hollywood history repeatedly proves, often functions as the most reliable publicity campaign imaginable. Whether celebrated or ridiculed, MELANIAelania succeeded in doing what every documentary hopes to accomplish: make people talk.
