Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho died a hero, but his return to Arrakis promises a very different kind of trouble, one that he described as unleashing hell. In the first Dune film, Duncan sacrificed himself to hold off the Emperor’s elite Sardaukar soldiers, giving Paul Atreides and Lady Jessica time to escape into the desert. Now, Momoa is returning in Dune: Part Three as Hayt, a ghola, or clone, of the fallen warrior, and heroism might not be on the menu.
From shielding Paul Atreides to potentially unleashing chaos as Hayt, Momoa is bringing the same face back to Arrakis, but a very different game.

Jason Momoa is returning to Arrakis, but the Duncan Idaho who once saved Paul Atreides might not be the man audiences meet in Dune: Part Three. The actor is stepping into the role of Hayt, a genetically engineered replica known as a ghola, carrying fragments of his predecessor’s memories. As Momoa revealed to Empire magazine, inhabiting this unfamiliar version of a beloved character came with its own challenges.
“I was just waiting to get to that point where you’re like, ‘This is my guy, man. I’m going to unleash hell on everyone!’” he said.
The transformation is particularly intriguing because Hayt is not simply Duncan Idaho resurrected for another round of swordplay. Momoa admitted that returning in a different form felt nerve-wracking, especially when he had originally signed up to play the fearless warrior audiences already knew. Yet the actor is clearly eager to discover what remains of Duncan beneath Hayt’s engineered identity, and his promise of mayhem suggests that the reunion will be anything but straightforward.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Momoa also teased a dramatically different relationship with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, who has evolved from the young heir Duncan once protected into a powerful Emperor whose reign leaves destruction across the galaxy. Momoa described Chalamet’s interpretation as “strong, silent and violent,” praising the younger actor for matching him physically and mentally. Their dynamic promises a fascinating reversal of the original film’s relationship.
Jason Momoa might be giving Robert Pattinson’s alien transformation a run for its money with his own dramatic change for Dune: Part Three.
Jason Momo goes clean shave for Dune: Part Three
Jason Momoa has sacrificed plenty for his roles, but Dune: Part Three has asked him to give up something that has practically become his calling card. At director Denis Villeneuve’s request, the actor shaved off the beard that had defined his rugged appearance for more than six years. The transformation was necessary to bring the unsettlingly different Duncan Idaho, now the ghola Hayt, to life.

Momoa even documented the shearing process on Instagram, making his reluctance to part with his beloved facial hair abundantly clear. The actor last sported a completely clean-shaven face while filming the original Dune in 2019, making this a particularly dramatic return to his earlier look. For Dune: Part Three, Momoa has traded his signature beard for Hayt’s unfamiliar face, proving that his transformation goes well beyond a change of character.
