David Krumholtz confirmed he has put his acting career on hold, closing a chapter he once feared to face. For years, the actor carried a quiet dread about walking away, certain that leaving would leave him financially adrift. That fear finally loosened its grip, replaced by an unexpected sense of relief.
"The fear was that I'd go broke and not be able to handle being out of the game. But I sent the definitive email," he wrote on his Threads account, later deleted, as reported by Deadline.
He then added, "I just removed a humongous burden, one that I truly didn't fathom the weight of until it was gone. Frustrated, fed up, fried," revealing just how heavy the choice truly felt.

Deadline reported that fellow actor Garret Dillahunt responded to the announcement with support, calling the news sad yet understandable. Krumholtz replied that the break was not a complete exit, describing it instead as redefining his terms while hoping to find a new, more rewarding passion. He noted that his old me, my product, and I mentality no longer served him, adding that he wanted to be of service moving forward. The actor stressed there was no clear plan for what comes next.
As Krumholtz steps back from one iconic chapter, another piece of his filmography prepares for a fresh spotlight.
10 Things I Hate About You heads to Broadway with a starry creative team
David Krumholtz appeared in the original 10 Things I Hate About You in 1999, sharing the screen with Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the beloved teen comedy. That same film is now being reimagined for the stage, led by Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen. Jepsen and Ethan Gruska are shaping the music and lyrics, while Dunham and Jessica Huang are writing the book together. Preview performances begin on August 17, 2027, closing the circle nearly three decades later.

Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph the production, while Tom Kitt oversees music supervision and orchestrations. The story follows the Stratford sisters facing cliques, crushes, and family rules, a premise the musical promises to reinterpret through new songs and staging. Details on venue and casting remain unannounced, keeping anticipation high ahead of next year. As one chapter from Krumholtz's past finds new life on Broadway, his own next chapter stays entirely unwritten.
