Sebastian Stan has jokingly claimed that he is Batman in The Batman: Part II, turning questions about his mysterious role into a very on-brand answer. The actor has faced plenty of speculation about which character he will play in Matt Reeves’ sequel. With supporting roles under wraps, every interview becomes another fan detective exercise.

And while Stan’s latest answer does little to settle the mystery, it does give the speculation a suitably Bat-shaped detour.

Sebastian Stan turns his mystery role into a Batman joke

Sebastian Stan addressed the speculation around his role in Matt Reeves The Batman: Part II during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, while discussing how he came to join The Batman: Part II. Josh Horowitz acknowledged that he was not going to press Stan for the character’s identity because there was already plenty of conjecture surrounding the casting.

Stan, on the hand, decided to make the guessing game considerably less useful.

“I mean, you know. I’m Batman. Who else would I be?” He said with a big smile.

For anyone keeping score, no, Stan has not confirmed himself as Batman. Robert Pattinson remains the franchise’s Dark Knight, while Stan’s actual character is still officially under wraps. The joke is just particularly fitting for an actor who spent years navigating Marvel’s own culture of secrecy.

The joke arrives as Matt Reeves’ sequel moves closer to becoming a reality after a notably long development period.

The Batman: Part II is finally taking shape

The Batman: Part II is currently scheduled for February 18, 2028, with Robert Pattinson returning opposite new additions including Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson. Matt Reeves directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin, and the story remains largely undisclosed.

Reeves completed the script in 2025 after years of development, with production eventually getting underway in London. Warner Bros. has already released camera-test footage showing Pattinson back in the cowl, while Reeves has continued to keep the sequel’s plot firmly behind the curtain.

That secrecy has only made Stan’s casting more intriguing. Pattinson has described the sequel as “a real left turn” from the first film while retaining elements of its atmosphere, suggesting Reeves is not simply repeating the formula that worked the first time.

For now, Stan can keep claiming the cowl as a joke. Until Reeves, a genius as per Stan, says otherwise, Gotham still belongs to Pattinson, and Stan’s real role remains one of the sequel’s better-kept secrets.
