Bryan Cranston is mourning the loss of someone who became much more than his on-screen son. RJ Mitte, best known for playing Walter White Jr. in Breaking Bad, has died at 34, leaving behind a legacy that extended beyond his work on the acclaimed crime drama. And Cranston, who played his father on the show, took to Instagram to share an emotional tribute, remembering the young actor he first met when he was just 14.

Their bond, built during the making of one of television's most celebrated dramas, clearly remained meaningful long after the series ended.

Recalling their first meeting, Bryan Cranston said Mitte was only 14 when he was cast as Walter White Jr. He praised the actor's determination, noting that despite living with cerebral palsy, Mitte never used his condition as an excuse to hold himself back. Cranston also remembered how the teenager listened to advice from his television parents, even if he sometimes chose to learn certain lessons the hard way.

The Breaking Bad star watched Mitte grow into a fine actor and use his platform to advocate for performers with disabilities. Cranston also shared that the two had been texting just weeks earlier, trying to arrange a lunch together.

“I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future… But I do know that I loved him, and thoroughly enjoyed being with him throughout the years on the series, and after the spotlight on Breaking Bad dimmed. “I’ll miss you, son,” he wrote in his heartfelt post.

His words capture the personal loss behind the headlines, remembering not just a former co-star but someone he had known since adolescence. Mitte died on October 12, 2026, at 34 in Brownsville, Texas. His representative confirmed his death, while authorities initially reported an ongoing investigation.

Mitte's impact, however, was never limited to his relationship with Cranston or his place in television history. His work on Breaking Bad introduced him to millions of viewers, while his efforts beyond the screen helped broaden representation for people with disabilities.

Looking back at RJ Mitte's career beyond Breaking Bad

RJ Mitte rose to prominence as Walter White Jr., the son of Cranston's Walter White, appearing throughout all five seasons of Breaking Bad from 2008 to 2013. Drawing on his own experience with cerebral palsy, he brought authenticity to the character and became a recognizable part of the series.

After the show, Mitte continued acting, appearing in the drama Switched at Birth and in projects including The Oak Room, The Recall, and The Guardians of Justice. He also became a prominent advocate for disability inclusion, working with organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, and serving as president of the Mitte Foundation.
