Professor Charles Xavier was always going to have one more chess match, but nobody knew how final the game would be. Sir Patrick Stewart's return in Avengers: Doomsday was confirmed in March 2025 alongside Ian McKellen and the original X-Men cast. The January 2026 teaser gave fans their first glimpse of Xavier and Magneto reunited, while Stewart discussed the role in a July interview.

What nobody knew was that this would be his final movie appearance. Now, his Avengers: Doomsday return and his words about never retiring feel like a farewell fans were never prepared to hear.

Some goodbyes are written into a film's release date, while others only become apparent much later. Sir Patrick Stewart's final movie role will be as Professor Charles Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday, which he completed filming before his death on October 28, 2026, at the age of 86. The December 18 release will therefore mark a posthumous farewell to one of cinema's most recognisable mutants.

“I can’t imagine ever officially retiring. I’ll always and forever be an actor,” he once said.

In the July interview with TV Insider, Stewart discussed his decision to return as Charles Xavier and made it clear that retirement was never part of his vocabulary. Reflecting on the fewer roles available to actors as they grow older, the veteran performer insisted that he still welcomed interesting offers and the chance to challenge himself with new work. And he stayed true to his word till the end.

There is an especially fitting sense of closure in Stewart's final appearance alongside longtime friend and X-Men co-star Ian McKellen, who returns as Magneto. Avengers: Doomsday will mark the ninth and final time Stewart portrays Professor X across a 26-year journey that began with the original X-Men in 2000. With James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming also returning, the film reunites the original mutant ensemble for one last chapter.
