Idris Elba has finally admitted that he was never truly part of the James Bond race despite endless rumors suggesting otherwise. Audiences spent years picturing the Luther star adjusting a tuxedo cuff somewhere inside MI6 while the internet passionately debated whether Britain had already found its next 007. Through every Bond casting cycle, from the final Daniel Craig era to newer names like Henry Cavill and Jacob Elordi entering the conversation, Elba somehow remained the fan favorite who never officially existed in the race at all.

As Amazon MGM Studios continues its search for the next James Bond and several rising British names still dominating industry speculation, Idris Elba has now firmly stepped away from the conversation himself.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of Masters of the Universe on May 18, Idris Elba decisively shut down the speculation that followed him for years.

“My name's not getting thrown out, no way,” he said. “They're going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can't wait. It's going to be amazing.”

The actor delivered the real headline moments later when he admitted, “I'm honestly not in the race ever. I wasn't in the race in the first place.”

That statement lands with peculiar irony because Bond speculation practically became part of Elba’s public identity. The rumors intensified after leaked Sony emails in 2014 reportedly mentioned him as a potential successor, and ever since then his name floated around the franchise like a ghost at Casino Royale. During his 2023 appearance on the Smartless podcast, Elba explained that while being linked to Bond initially felt like a compliment and a career milestone.

But for now, the actor appears entirely content leaving the tuxedo behind for someone younger.

Instead of MI6, Idris Elba is heading to Eternia

For now, Idris Elba can be seen charging into fantasy warfare in Masters of the Universe, Amazon MGM Studios’ massive live action adaptation of Mattel’s legendary franchise. Directed by Travis Knight, the film stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam and He-Man. Alongside them are Jared Leto as Skeletor, Camila Mendes as Teela, and Idris Elba as Duncan, better known to fans as Man-At-Arms. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on June 5, 2026.

The plot follows Prince Adam returning to Eternia after years away from his home planet, eventually reclaiming the Sword of Power to battle Skeletor and save the universe from collapse. Elba’s role as Duncan places him at the emotional and military core of Eternia’s resistance. He is not simply a warrior but a mentor figure, weapons master, strategist, and protector of Teela.

Idris Elba may never have become James Bond, but perhaps that is exactly why the fascination endured for so long. Some actors inherit iconic roles. Others become iconic enough that audiences permanently imagine them inside those roles anyway.
