Mandy Moore played the queen bee with such sugary menace that a chocolate milkshake became a weapon of teenage warfare.

Twenty-five years later, Christy Carlson Romano has revealed an awkward encounter that apparently gave her an uncomfortable taste of that Lana energy away from the cameras. The Even Stevens star says a 2000 Princess Diaries party ended with Moore laughing at her during an already embarrassing exchange

Leaving Romano with one unforgettable thought, “Mandy’s a mean girl!”

Christy Carlson Romano recounted the awkward encounter during an October 2026 interview on Page Six Radio while promoting her memoir Once Upon a Trainwreck, describing how she attended a Malibu wrap party for The Princess Diaries in 2000 after her Even Stevens costar Ty Hodges invited her to celebrate Erik von Detten's involvement in the film.

Upon arriving, Romano spotted Heather Matarazzo, who played Mia's best friend Lilly, and approached her mentioning they'd previously worked together on an MTV project in New York City before Matarazzo's breakthrough role. Matarazzo responded awkwardly, claiming she didn't remember Romano, setting an uncomfortable tone that escalated when Moore joined the conversation.

""I was so hurt by it. I was like, 'Mandy's a mean girl!' I didn't know what to make of it, but I did crash that party, man," Romano stated, recalling how Moore delivered a condescending laugh while standing next to Matarazzo that left her feeling embarrassed and rejected by the film's cast.

And while Romano is reopening one chapter of Genovian history, Disney is busy trying to write the next one.

Disney officially greenlit The Princess Diaries 3 in April 2025, with Adele Lim directing from a screenplay by Crazy Rich Asians co-writer Adele Lim and The Princess Diaries veteran Gina Wendkos. Anne Hathaway returns as Queen Mia Thermopolis, now ruling Genovia while navigating middle-aged royal responsibilities, potential romantic entanglements, and possibly mentoring the next generation of Genovian leadership. 

Hector Elizondo is also set to reprise his beloved role as Joe, Mia's loyal bodyguard and confidant, while Julie Andrews' participation remains the franchise's most pressing question given her 2023 retirement from acting following her stroke recovery, Hathaway had earlier revealed that she pushed really hard to get Julie Andrews on board.

Plot details remain tightly guarded, though Lim has teased themes of generational transition, female leadership, and Mia potentially facing diplomatic crises testing her queenship. Production timelines remain unconfirmed, though industry insiders suggest filming could commence in 2027 for a 2028 or 2029 theatrical release marking the franchise's nearly 30-year anniversary.
