John Goodman has reflected on reaching 400 pounds and surviving addiction, calling it a stretch when he was on his way out. The Roseanne star sat down for a long conversation covering five decades of work, and the heavier moments arrived between the film talk. Fans know him as the big, booming presence in every room. Few realized how much effort it took to keep that presence upright.
While audiences laughed along with the big man on screen, the man under the makeup was carrying far more than a character.
John Goodman looks back at his lowest point at 400 pounds
John Goodman has admitted he was close to losing everything to alcohol and a 400-pound frame. The reveal came on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where Josh Horowitz asked whether sobriety felt like a second chance at life.
“I was on my way out, weighing about 400 lb and doing that too,” said Goodman.
Asked whether colleagues noticed, he added, “Well, vodka doesn’t smell, but I would get lit. And that they say that for a reason because my cheeks would glow red.”

Goodman said the makeup department could spot his drinking because the redness in his cheeks was difficult to hide. He identified his extended stay in Berlin as his lowest point, recalling how he returned home knowing he had to turn things around. That period also coincided with Bringing Out the Dead, which he struggled with because he could not find his character and felt he was not there for the people around him.
Goodman may have been on his way out once, but his calendar suggests he turned around at the exit and picked up several more jobs.
John Goodman books his next chapter with roles stretching into 2027
John Goodman is set to play Jack, the father of Claire Danes’ Aggie Wiggs, in Netflix’s The Beast in Me season 2, with production expected in New Jersey from November 2026 to March 2027. Aggie is described as a long-time con artist, so family dinners should be interesting. No release date has been announced. Goodman also joins HBO’s The Last of Us season 3 as Joey, one half of a friendly duo called the Heroes of the Highway, alongside Ian Alexander as Paco. That season is expected in 2027.

On the film side, Goodman appears in the horror thriller Skeletons, directed by JT Mollner and led by Brie Larson. The supporting cast includes Kyle Gallner, Willa Fitzgerald, Ione Skye, and Keith Carradine. The creature story is told from a young boy’s perspective and centers on his parents’ secret. Filming wrapped in Australia in summer 2026, and the film opens in theaters on June 4, 2027. For a man who was once on his way out, Goodman has booked an impressive number of reasons to stay.
