Before Hollywood came calling, Chris Pratt was living in a van in Hawaii with just $60 to his name, a bag of clothes, and a pair of rollerblades. Today, the actor is a familiar face across blockbuster franchises and beloved television comedies, but his journey began far from the glitz of a movie premiere. His latest throwback offers a reminder that even some of Hollywood’s biggest stars started with little more than an improbable opportunity.
The actor’s latest reflection revisits the unlikely circumstances that led him to Los Angeles, proving that sometimes a career-defining break arrives when you least expect it.
Chris Pratt’s first Hollywood break came from a chance encounter at a shrimp restaurant
In a recent post on X, Chris Pratt opened up about his life before fame.
“Before Hollywood, I was living in a van in Hawaii and waiting tables at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company,” he wrote.
“...I had about $60 to my name, a bag of clothes, and some rollerblades,” he continued.
His big break came when actor and filmmaker Rae Dawn Chong walked into the restaurant where he worked. Pratt approached her table, recognized her as a movie star, and asked what she was doing there. When Chong asked whether he could act, he enthusiastically replied, “F*** yeah, put me in your movie!”

In his post on X, Pratt explained how that spontaneous conversation led to an audition for Cursed Part 3, a low-budget horror comedy that became his first major acting opportunity. After receiving the script, he read its 120 pages three times in a row and meticulously marked the lines and inflections he wanted to use at the audition. Chong offered him the part, but the production was in Los Angeles rather than Hawaii.
And the actor who once arrived at an audition with every line marked in pencil would eventually become the face of billion-dollar franchises, trading a borrowed phone number for a career that reached audiences worldwide.
From Andy Dwyer to Star-Lord, Pratt has come a long way from his first audition
That first break eventually led Chris Pratt into a career that would span sitcoms, action adventures, and some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. He first gained recognition as Bright Abbott in Everwood before becoming a fan favorite as the lovable, occasionally clueless Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation. His transition into leading-man territory arrived with Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy in 2014, followed by the blockbuster success of Jurassic World in 2015.

Now, Pratt is preparing for another leading role in Way of the Warrior Kid, an Apple Original Film whose trailer arrived on October 27. He plays Jake, an injured Navy SEAL who helps his bullied nephew Marc, played by Jude Hill, build confidence through a training program inspired by military discipline. Directed by McG and co-starring Linda Cardellini and Jocko Willink, the film premieres globally on Apple TV on November 25, 2026.
Pratt’s journey from a restaurant floor in Hawaii to franchise stardom is a reminder that a Hollywood origin story does not always begin with a grand plan. Sometimes, it begins with the courage to approach a stranger and say yes to an opportunity.
