Sylvester Stallone spent time scooping lion waste at the Central Park Zoo before Rocky made him a household name. "Fifteen minutes later, I was in a lion cage with a hose, a scoop, and a shovel," he recalls in his 2026 memoir The Steps.

He then added, "I liked animals, but I didn’t like reeking as if I had the world’s greatest bladder problem."

Stallone worked from 5:30 in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon for about three and a half weeks, as he wrote in The Steps. Older accounts put the pay at roughly $1.12 an hour. The lions had surprising aim, with some retellings claiming they could hit him from 15 feet away. No shower fully cleared the smell, and it kept sabotaging his visits to acting agencies until he quit.

While lion cages tested his nose, a far more personal test waited on the Rocky set, involving his own father.

Sylvester Stallone told The New York Times while promoting The Steps that an altercation broke out during Rocky, with his father at the center. He had cast his father as the timekeeper for the climactic fight, hoping the small role would let him witness his son’s breakthrough. Then the moment arrived, and the bell never rang on cue. Rocky Balboa kept fighting anyway, which threw the carefully choreographed sequence off rhythm.

Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed, was left wondering why the fight continued. Stallone explained that the routine called for a count of four before the bell, not ten. The moment carried extra weight because Frank Stallone Sr. had long been a distant and competitive father. Polo eventually gave them common ground, and things softened before the elder Stallone died in 2011. Stallone wanted a proud moment and got an altercation. After weeks of shoveling lion waste, a family scuffle probably smelled like an upgrade.
