Brendan Fraser had a near-death experience on the set of his beloved classic The Mummy. Some movies are just timeless pieces that can be rewatched again and again while still retaining the first-time charm. The 1999 adventure-action film, The Mummy, is definitely one of those movies.
It has a special place in the hearts of many of us, especially those of us who grew up in the late 1990s. The incredibly endearing and gruff Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell served as the focal point of this magnificent, daring adventure, which had the ideal balance of action, humor, and just a pinch of horror.
But making it was not a smooth ride for the cast and crew, especially not for Brendan Fraser, who once shared how he encountered a near-fatal accident on the set while filming a scene.

Brendan Fraser’s near-death experience on The Mummy set
Many people are unaware of how dangerous the filming of Rick O'Connell's rendezvous with the gallows - one of the film's most famous scenes - was shot. Recalling his time spent making The Mummy, Brendan Fraser once revealed that he nearly died while filming that scene. The Whale star discussed the traumatic event during a 2023 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
“I was choked out accidentally. There’s a hanging sequence…,” Fraser revealed.
According to what he shared, Fraser was asked to sell the close-up shot of his character being hanged a little more by director Stephen Sommers, who was striving to get it exactly right. Fraser tried his hardest to make it appear realistic for the last take, and that's when things went wrong. Fraser continued by explaining that although he was standing on his tiptoes in the picture, he had very little leeway because the person holding the rope had pulled it up higher than before.
“And then the next thing I knew, my elbow was in my ear, the world was sideways, and there was gravel in my teeth, and everyone was really quiet,” Fraser told Kelly Clarkson.
A bit later, Fraser woke up to the sound of one of the coordinators calling his name and inviting him to "the club." He quickly discovered that Mel Gibson had experienced the same thing on the sets of Braveheart. A sobering, almost indifferent admission of how near catastrophe he had been.
Anyhow, this harrowing experience has not managed to rob Fraser of his love for the franchise, and he is set to return after 17 years of waiting.
Brendan Fraser is back at his church
Brendan Fraser is confirmed to return to The Mummy franchise after 17 long years. In the impending fourth installment, Fraser, who starred as Rick O'Connell in the 1999 film, will portray his iconic character. The Scream crew Radio Silence will be in charge of the movie, which is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and is touted as a sequel rather than a reboot.

David Coggeshall wrote the script, while Sean Daniel is the producer. Fraser, despite his near-fatal experience of filming, is excited to offer fans what they want after years of waiting, and his comeback is seen as a long-awaited chance to create the tale he has always wanted to tell. On October 15, 2027, the movie is scheduled to open in theaters.
