Long before Matt Damon became an Oscar-winning star, he was ready to take a financial hit for a chance to step into Gotham. Landing a role in a Batman or Spider-Man film remains one of Hollywood's most coveted offers. And Damon pulled every lever to land one such role.
At the time, he was still in the early stages of his career, bouncing from one audition to the next in search of his big break. And the chance to play the man with a cape and mask seemed too good to pass up.

During his interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Damon recalled that in the 1990s, he made it to the final three actors being considered for the role of Robin in Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin. However, Damon revealed that Chris O'Donnell ultimately got the part, but the studio and the actor were still negotiating his salary at the time. And since Damon wanted the role, he even offered to take a 75% pay cut just to play Robin.
“And I remember calling I was like I'll work for a quarter of what that dude's working for. I was like I want the job. I flew in and auditioned for Joel,” he said.

However, Damon revealed on the podcast that the production wanted Chris O'Donnell for the role and was only willing to pay the salary they had set. In the end, O'Donnell landed the part. That was not the only time Damon came close to playing Robin. He was also in the running for Tim Burton's Batman and even auditioned, but the role of Robin was ultimately cut from the film.
Now, missing out on a Batman movie clearly did not hurt Damon's career. He got his big break with Good Will Hunting and went on to build an impressive resume with several hits. What remained constant, however, was his commitment to giving everything he had for a role.
Even today, Damon has not shied away from pushing himself physically, recently undergoing a dramatic weight loss transformation for his film, The Odyssey.
Matt Damon lost 30 lbs for The Odyssey
Matt Damon stars as the Greek hero Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. To convincingly portray the legendary warrior, who fought brutal battles and a dangerous journey across the seas, Damon lost 30 Lbs. Losing such amount of weight for the role was no small feat, but the actor fully committed to it.
"Sadly, there's no shortcut. It's all diet and and exercise,” Damon told Entertainment Tonight.

In an interview, Damon opened up about following a strict diet, made even more challenging by his gluten allergy. As his co-stars shared, Damon's abdominal muscles were so defined that they were visible even through loose-fitting clothing. It is the same level of dedication the actor has consistently brought to his performances throughout his career.
