John Davidson will attend the BAFTA Scotland ceremony from a separate relaxed space, even as I Swear, the film inspired by his life, leads the event with seven nominations. It creates an unusual awards-season picture for a film so closely tied to its real-life subject, with Davidson set to be inside the Glasgow venue but away from the main ceremony floor. The arrangement follows the controversy surrounding his involuntary vocal tic at February’s BAFTA Film Awards, putting the upcoming celebration under a very different kind of spotlight.
Now, its latest awards recognition arrives alongside a carefully considered change to how Davidson will take part in the ceremony, bringing the film’s success and the fallout from February into the same frame.

For the November 15 ceremony in Glasgow, John Davidson will attend the BAFTA Scotland Awards but watch the event through a video link from a separate relaxed space inside the venue, alongside his family and friends. BAFTA said the arrangement followed conversations with Davidson, Tourettes Action and Tourette Scotland, as well as a wider risk assessment, with the setup reflecting Davidson’s own suggestion for how he could participate.

The decision comes after the February BAFTA Film Awards, where Davidson’s involuntary tics included the N-word while Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting the first award. Davidson has Tourette syndrome and experiences coprolalia, a type of vocal tic involving involuntary expressions of socially inappropriate words or phrases. As per Variety, BAFTA subsequently commissioned an independent review and said it had strengthened its safeguarding, risk assessment and compliance procedures for live events.
There is an especially striking layer to the arrangement because Davidson is not simply attending as a guest. He is the Scottish Tourette syndrome campaigner whose life inspired I Swear, and he also serves as an executive producer on the film. The story that reaches the BAFTA Scotland stage is therefore inseparable from the person whose experiences gave it its starting point, even as the ceremony has been structured to give him a separate space within the venue.
I Swear leads BAFTA Scotland nominations with seven
Against that unusual backdrop, I Swear arrives as the leading title in this year’s BAFTA Scotland nominations, collecting seven competitive nods. BAFTA’s official list includes Robert Aramayo, Peter Mullan and Scott Ellis Watson in the Actor - Film category, Shirley Henderson in Actress - Film, Kirk Jones in Director - Fiction and Writer - Film/Television, while the film is also nominated in Feature Film.

The recognition extends the film’s awards run after Aramayo won the BAFTA for Leading Actor at the UK ceremony earlier this year. At the Scotland Awards, Mullan is also among the six nominees for the Audience Award, where he is recognised for playing Tommy Trotter, Davidson’s mentor and ally. The winners will be announced in Glasgow on November 15, with Edith Bowman hosting.
For a film built around Davidson’s life, the BAFTA Scotland night now carries two parallel stories: I Swear is heading into the ceremony with one of the strongest nomination hauls, while the man whose experiences shaped it will experience the evening from a separate room within the same venue.
