NBCUniversal Entertainment chair Donna Langley lured Taylor Sheridan away from Paramount by offering a better film deal. The Yellowstone creator spent roughly a decade at the studio, turning a single Western drama into a sprawling television empire. News of the move broke in late October 2025, and the industry took notice almost immediately. Behind that headline sat a patient pitch, made at a moment when Paramount had its hands full.
While a better contract sounds like obvious bait, Langley needed the right moment first, and she explained how it arrived.
Donna Langley saw an opportunity to bring Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan to NBCUniversal
Donna Langley landed Taylor Sheridan by spotting a weakness in his Paramount film arrangement and offering him a deal with real teeth. The Yellowstone creator held only a first-look film deal there, which carried less weight than his television contract.
"I saw an opportunity," Langley said at Bloomberg's Screentime event.
She then added, "Where I started talking to Taylor was about film, because I knew that he had a film deal at Paramount."

During the same Screentime conversation, Langley said disruption and instability at Paramount created a moment to scan the marketplace for a competitive advantage. She never explicitly named the cause, but the timing points to the turbulent yearlong merger process that surrounded Paramount Skydance. The film side of the NBCUniversal pact is expected to take effect in 2026. The television side follows only after Sheridan finishes his existing Paramount obligations in 2028.
While NBCUniversal waits for Sheridan's television chapter, Netflix is already unpacking a fan favorite crime drama from his Paramount days.

Mayor of Kingstown lands on Netflix on October 5, 2026, with all four seasons ready to stream. The addition comes through the streaming giant's licensing deal with Paramount, which also covers SEAL Team, Watson, Matlock, and The King of Queens. The series premiered in 2021 and follows the McLusky family, power brokers in a fictional Michigan town. Jeremy Renner stars as Michael McLusky, with Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon as co-creators.

Season 5 got a green light from Paramount in January, and production reportedly ran from March 2026 until it wrapped in July. No release date has been confirmed, though it could arrive in late 2026 or sometime in 2027, exclusively on Paramount+. The final season introduces a new character who threatens to reveal Mike's secrets and upset the delicate balance in Kingstown. Fans can binge all four seasons from October 5. Netflix gets the show for now, while Donna Langley already has the creator.
