Ian McKellen was seemingly not impressed when he found out that Florence Pugh does not have one crucial experience on her resume. Florence Pugh has often shared that she has never performed in a theater production. She revealed the same to her co-star Ian McKellen on the set of Avengers: Doomsday. And as the actress recalled, McKellen was shocked by the revelation.

“He was just absolutely horrified. And then he was like, ‘Patrick! Patrick! She’s never done a play!’ I really horrified them,” she told Vanity Fair.

Now, while Pugh’s description of McKellen being horrified in her interview with Vanity Fair could have been an exaggeration, the actor’s shock is understandable. McKellen has spent as much time in Hollywood as he has in theater productions, and the same is true for many actors whose careers began by performing in front of live audiences. However, Pugh took a different path, going straight from school into professional acting, which is also quite impressive.

The actress has never attended drama school or received formal acting training. In an interview with This Cultural Life, she revealed that she sometimes felt terrified on the set of King Lear. She felt that someone with a theatrical background might be considered a better actor than her. However, Pugh shared that she has worked hard and learned from the actors and directors she has collaborated with.

That effort and dedication have been evident not only in Pugh’s hit and critically acclaimed films but also in her work ethic on set.

One thing she absolutely hopes for on every project, as she shared in an interview, is a good and safe environment on set.

“I don’t like messy sets. I want people to come to work and work, and enjoy that it’s a luxury to do this. When moods change on set, it’s because someone is preventing that from happening, and that’s what makes people feel like they haven’t been cared for,” she said.

This also speaks to the actress’s professionalism and work ethic. So, while she may not have experience with professional theater productions, her experience performing in school dramas, along with her work with several notable directors and actors, has seemingly helped shape her career. She has consistently taken on different and challenging roles, from Midsommar to Lady Macbeth, and is set to show another brilliant performance in Avengers: Doomsday.
