Olivia Wilde reveals Walton Goggins became her real-life hero after rescuing her from a frightening on-set accident while shooting for Cowboys & Aliens. Some of Hollywood’s most memorable behind-the-scenes scares have turned into industry folklore, from near-fatal stunt mishaps to accidents that changed how productions approach safety.
Stars like Tom Cruise, who has repeatedly pushed the limits on action sets, and Harrison Ford, who has dealt with serious injuries across multiple projects, have long shown how quickly a film set can become dangerous.
Olivia Wilde would have belonged in that grim company after a terrifying horse accident if a costar had not reacted in time.

A split-second move that saved Olivia Wilde on the sets of Cowboys & Aliens
Olivia Wilde shared the story during the Armchair Expert podcast appearance, explaining that the incident unfolded during a high-speed desert gallop with multiple horses charging behind her on the sets of Cowboys & Aliens. She described being thrown after her horse hit a ditch, leaving her on the ground in a position where the oncoming animals could not see her. And coming to her rescue was Walter Goggins.
“I owe him my life,” she said, referring to Walton Goggins, making clear just how close the situation came to turning tragic. What saved her, Wilde explained, was Goggins’ split-second decision to move his horse sideways and block the others from reaching her. She said he was calm, skilled, and fast enough to understand the danger before anyone else did.
“He’s a real-life hero,” she continued on the podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), underscoring that his instinctive move likely prevented a stampede that could have been catastrophic. The actress said the moment still feels unreal in hindsight because the danger was hidden by dust and the lip of the ditch, which made her essentially invisible to the horses behind her. She recalled hearing the sound of the animals closing in and believing the outcome could have been devastating.
“It was like they were coming towards me,” she said, capturing the panic of being pinned to the ground while chaos approached.
That brush with danger now sits alongside a very different kind of headline for Wilde as The Invite seems to be promising.
A strong start for The Invite signals early momentum
The Invite is emerging as one of the most promising limited releases of the year, turning a small debut into a notable specialty box office win. The A24 comedy opened in New York and Los Angeles on just seven screens and brought in about $379,000, fueled by packed theaters and strong early audience response.
The standout figure is its per-screen average of roughly $54,000, a number that signals real demand and gives distributors confidence ahead of expansion. The ensemble cast led by Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen, alongside Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, has helped position the film as a sharp, adult-leaning comedy with wide appeal. Plans are already in motion to expand into more markets before a broader release.

The opening follows a familiar pattern in the specialty space, where strong early reactions can quickly build momentum. In this case, the mix of high-profile talent, sold-out screenings, and positive word of mouth has created a solid launchpad. If that energy carries forward, The Invite could become one of the season’s more reliable success stories.
