Hollywood has presented Matt Damon with several opportunities that never quite worked out. The actor, over the years, has opened up about several projects he could not commit to because of other filming obligations, but one particular film was entirely within reach. He loved the script, had no scheduling hurdles to worry about, and still did not get onboard. Instead, he overanalyzed the opportunity and ended up passing on a movie he loved.
Damon recently confessed that he regrets missing out on Ted, which went on to become a hit with Mark Wahlberg at the helm.

Matt Damon recently told GQ that he was originally offered the lead role of John Bennett in Seth MacFarlane's 2012 comedy Ted. He admitted that he found Ted one of the funniest scripts he had ever read. Damon recalled laughing so hard while going through the screenplay that he even took it along to dinner and read several parts to his friends. However, he eventually got caught up in overthinking his way out of the comedy.
"I overthought it and I talked myself out of it. And because it shot in Boston, it would’ve been a chance for me to be home—my father’s passed away now, and I look back and I go, Man, that would’ve been six months back [home]".

Damon has since watched Ted and has nothing but praise for how it turned out. He acknowledged that Mark Wahlberg was "great" in the film and that the movie itself was equally fantastic. In fact, Damon admitted that he could not have done a better job with the role, as he told GQ, graciously accepting that Wahlberg was the right fit for the comedy. As it turns out, Ted was not the only major project that Damon missed out on.

Damon's scheduling woes also cost him a part in Gus Van Sant's Milk. He was about to play Dan White and was already looking forward to the role. After speaking with Sean Penn, he even began preparing by watching documentaries about White. But when Penn's availability changed and the film was pushed back by three months, its new schedule collided with Damon's work with Paul Greengrass. He eventually had to give up the part.
