A truth that Michael Douglas hid for forty years

After more than forty years of dodging questions and keeping secrets, Michael Douglas has finally admitted that his electric on-screen chemistry with Kathleen Turner during the filming of 1984's Romancing the Stone spilled over into real life. In his brand-new memoir, One Helluva Ride, the legendary actor confessed that he and Turner actively misled the public for over four decades regarding the true, intimate nature of their relationship.

"The truth is that during the production of Romancing the Stone, Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship," read part of an excerpt from his memoir published by PEOPLE.

However, they fabricated a lie about their relationship, covering it with a guise of friendship just to protect his then-wife Diandra and son Cameron, who was just five then. Douglas clarified that their co-star Danny DeVito and director Robert Zemeckis were unaware of his affair, and he would sneak into Turner's hotel room once everyone had gone to sleep.

He further explains in his memoir that he and Diandra were not together at the time. But they were technically married. So, when she found out about the affair, she subtly reminded Turner that they were still married in a one-off closed encounter on the set of the film, per PEOPLE.

This really made Turner back off, and they both ended things shortly after. However, things did get normal a bit later.

Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner’s friendship

Following the massive blockbuster success of Romancing the Stone, Kathleen Turner initially attempted to walk away from making the sequel, The Jewel of the Nile, but found herself legally bound to the project by contractual obligations. Despite initial tensions, the pair managed to smooth things over and rebuild their friendship while collaborating on the follow-up.

Despite the turbulent dynamics behind the scenes, Michael Douglas and Turner maintained a lasting friendship over the decades, eventually reuniting professionally on the dark comedy The War of the Roses in 1989 and later on his Netflix series The Kominsky Method in 2021. Meanwhile, Douglas's personal life evolved significantly after the initial secret-keeping era: his marriage to Diandra ultimately ended in divorce in 1995, and he has been married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones - with whom he shares two children - since 2000.
