Chris Rock had to pull out all the stops to get Daniel Kaluuya back in front of the camera. While most of the cast of Misty Green jumped at the opportunity to work with Rock, Kaluuya reportedly needed considerably more convincing before signing on to the A24 comedy-drama.
Kaluuya’s extended break from live-action acting made his casting particularly intriguing, but Rock was determined to get him for the role. The comedian and filmmaker has now revealed just how far he went to make it happen.
Chris Rock admits Daniel Kaluuya was not an easy pull
Chris Rock recalled approaching Daniel Kaluuya about Misty Green during a September 8, 2026, interview with Variety. According to Rock, the Nope star was “kind of retired” at the time, making him the one actor Rock had to personally pursue for the project.
“I had to beg him. He was the only one I had to beg. Everybody else was like, ‘I can’t wait to do this movie!’ Daniel, I had to go to his hotel. I definitely tap-danced. It was worth it,” said Chris Rock exclusively to Variety.

The filmmaker also told Variety that money played a major role in Kaluuya’s hesitation. Misty Green was made on a modest budget of around $5 million, meaning the actors were essentially working for near-scale compensation. Rock noted that with streaming services and the industry's current spending on diverse talent, actors are accustomed to being paid more substantially.
With Rock going as far as a hotel visit to secure one of his most important cast members, the story behind Misty Green is almost as entertaining as the movie itself. And Rock’s busy comedy schedule offers another reminder of just how much the filmmaker still has on his plate.
While Rock is busy bringing Kaluuya back to the big screen, his own star power continues to shine on the small screen as well.
