Cruise further explained in the dated Vanity Fair interview that his father was strict because he had been bullied as a child himself. Cruise thought his father was trying to protect him from going through the same pain, but the methods he used were admittedly very harsh. Looking back, Cruise confessed that he was very angry about the way he was treated, but he also acknowledged how complicated their relationship was, not failing to mention that his father could be very affectionate despite the chaos.
