Thomasin McKenzie has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most compelling young talents, bringing a quiet intensity to films such as Leave No Trace, Jojo Rabbit, and Last Night in Soho. Her latest challenge, The Uprising, places her opposite Andrew Garfield in Paul Greengrass’s historical drama about England’s 1381 Peasants’ Revolt.

McKenzie plays Alyce, a woman caught within a violent period of rebellion and social upheaval. Yet one pivotal scene tested her confidence in a deeply personal way.

Speaking on the Collider Ladies Night podcast, Thomasin McKenzie described filming a pivotal scene where her character Alyce stops Garfield's Ploughman from leaving.

"One of those days as an actor where I felt really unprepared and like I felt a lot of imposter syndrome," she confessed, recalling the emotional weight of the moment.

The scene required a massive emotional release, and after completing one powerful take, McKenzie struggled to replicate that intensity during subsequent attempts. The second take emerged as a more restrained version, with Alyce attempting to maintain strength rather than fully breaking down.

Director Paul Greengrass helped her access deeper emotions by sharing personal information about someone from his family and why the scene held significance, triggering an overwhelming response. McKenzie revealed on the podcast that Greengrass ultimately chose the second, more restrained take for the final cut, a decision she now understands served the film better

That support mattered because The Uprising places its characters inside an unusually brutal historical setting.

Directed and written by Paul Greengrass, The Uprising dramatizes the English Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, when commoners rose against the authority surrounding King Richard II. Andrew Garfield stars as Ploughman, while Thomasin McKenzie plays Alyce alongside Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, and Katherine Waterston.

The film places personal suffering alongside a much larger rebellion. Focus Features describes the story as one of ordinary people forming an army against royal tyranny in a fight for justice and survival. Its historical setting also gives McKenzie’s intimate scene greater weight, since individual choices unfold against widespread violence and social unrest.

Greengrass approaches the period with the physical intensity associated with his filmmaking. The finished movie runs for roughly 128 minutes and carries an R rating for violence and bloody images. Reviews have highlighted its grim atmosphere, chaotic battle sequences, and handheld visual style, although some critics have questioned the film’s narrative direction.
