While Sebastian Stan is now a celebrated actor, he faced numerous ups and downs. Before landing his role as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he faced financial struggles and difficulty securing roles in Hollywood. During this period, the actor also turned down several roles that went on to become major hits, resulting in a few notable missed opportunities.
However, Stan holds no regrets about those past decisions, and there is one reason why.
Sebastian Stan is grateful for his career trajectory
Sebastian Stan spoke about his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. During the conversation, Josh Horowitz asked about the period before his Marvel debut, when he missed out on major projects such as The Vampire Diaries, as well as roles in Star Trek and Green Lantern. The actor admitted that he has no regrets about missing those opportunities.
“Now looking back, I feel grateful in a way ’cause I don’t know if I was really ready for that kind of exposure when I was younger, to be honest,” he said.

He further told Horowitz during the podcast that he was not mentally or emotionally in a position to take on roles that came with such immense fame. Looking back, the actor said he would not change anything about how his career ultimately turned out. Stan had auditioned for both Green Lantern and Star Trek, and although he did not land roles in either franchise, he eventually found his place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As for The Vampire Diaries, however, the actor turned down the role for an entirely different reason.
Sebastian Stan reveals reason behind turning down Vampire Diaries
The role of Stefan Salvatore in the hit teen drama The Vampire Diaries was initially offered to Sebastian Stan. However, in an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor shared that he had just wrapped up the first season of Kings and was feeling burned out following its cancellation. This was one of the reasons he decided not to take on the role in The Vampire Diaries.
“And I had just come off Kings, and I sort of felt really burnt out from that not working out and just sort of the idea of thinking, ‘Oh, I’m just going to sign up again for something that probably is not going to get to the second season,'" he said.

Moreover, after starring in the supernatural television series The Covenant, Stan did not want to join another supernatural show. The role eventually went to Paul Wesley, who went on to become unforgettable as Stefan Salvatore. While Stan has no regrets about his past near-misses, it is safe to say that he has more than made up for them with one incredible performance after another.
