Tom Cruise does not read his own scripts; he prefers hearing directors and writers perform them aloud instead. That detail alone hints at how differently the actor approaches every film he picks. Cruise discussed his creative habits while promoting Digger, his upcoming project with filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Before diving into prosthetics, film formats, and old movie memories, the conversation opened with a habit that has shaped his career.
While most actors chase pages and dialogue, one Hollywood veteran built an entire career on refusing to look at a single word himself, and the reason behind it is deliberate.
Why Tom Cruise refuses to read scripts before choosing a role
Tom Cruise revealed that he never reads a script himself, letting directors and writers read it aloud instead. He wants to experience the material purely as a viewer, without his own ideas shaping the story too early.
"Like what I do with with directors and writers is I don't read the scripts. I have them read it to me," Cruise said on the New Heights podcast.
He then added, "I don't want my ideas to invade it yet. I want to understand what is their communication."

On New Heights, Cruise expanded on this habit, explaining that he applies it to every department on a film, not just the script itself. He listens to wardrobe choices, lighting decisions, and camera angles before offering his own perspective. Cruise compared the process to playing jazz, where everyone contributes a rhythm before the full sound comes together. He rarely announces his ideas in advance, choosing instead to demonstrate them directly once he understands the creative direction others are building toward.
While that instinct guides him now, one old story shows it existed long before he had any say at all.
How Tom Cruise broke set rules on Taps to become his character
During a separate conversation with GQ, Tom Cruise looked back at Taps, the 1981 military drama that marked only his second film credit. He recalled shaving his head without telling the director, then simply removing his hat upon arriving on set. At eighteen years old, Cruise believed dedication meant outworking everyone around him, even if that meant altering his appearance without asking. He assumed the instruction to build his character applied literally, long before he understood the unspoken boundaries of a professional set.

Cruise noted that the same instinct now drives Digger, his upcoming film with Alejandro G. Iñárritu, releasing on October second. He praised Iñárritu's work on Amores Perros long before they ever collaborated, citing its framing, colors, and attention to detail. Cruise also compared how older films reach new generations through streaming and cable to how listeners rediscover the Beatles decades later. That early act of shaving his head without asking has now become just another chapter in an actor who has always trusted instinct over instruction.
