Zack Snyder has cast doubt on Rebel Moon 3, suggesting a third film depends on fans showing far more interest in the first two. The Netflix space saga arrived with big promises and an even bigger ambition. Critics did not roll out a red carpet for either chapter, and the director moved on to other work. Now a new movie needs promoting, and the answer sounds like a polite shrug.

While fans wonder if a third chapter exists anywhere beyond wishful thinking, Snyder has just supplied the most revealing answer yet.

Zack Snyder says Rebel Moon 3 now depends on fan groundswell

Rebel Moon 3 is currently on shaky ground because Zack Snyder says a sequel needs a louder fan groundswell first. Critics heavily criticized both Rebel Moon films, and even the extended R-rated cuts, which Snyder said better reflected his original vision, did not receive the stronger response needed to change the franchise’s trajectory.

"I do not know," he said, speaking to The Direct while promoting The Last Photograph, before trailing off.

He then said the director's cuts could still be discovered, adding that "there's a little bit more groundswell about maybe making another one."

In plain terms, the decision now sits squarely with audiences.

Speaking to The Direct, Snyder sounded far less relaxed than a year ago. Back then, he told Variety he was letting the Rebel Moon world boil while he worked on a Los Angeles Police Department SWAT movie for Netflix. Last year, co-writer Kurt Johnstad revealed that outlines for movies three through six already exist, though funding decisions sit above him. Those outlines still remain on paper, and Snyder's tone hints they might stay there.

While Rebel Moon waits on fan support, Snyder is equally candid about the superhero films he is deliberately skipping.

Zack Snyder explains why he has not watched Superman

Zack Snyder has not watched Superman, but he insists that choice has nothing to do with disliking James Gunn. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he called it a personal matter and said he wants Gunn to succeed. Snyder also said he trusts Gunn's aesthetic and his particular way of making movies. Their friendship, by his account, remains fully intact, even as the internet keeps trying to stage a rivalry.

Snyder has also skipped Supergirl and Lanterns, though memes on his X feed have made bits of Superman hard to avoid. His fingerprints are still on the film, since Gunn once asked him about the red trunks. Snyder had tried countless versions for Man of Steel and never made them work, while David Corenswet later convinced Gunn that the trunks made the suit friendlier. Rebel Moon 3, meanwhile, has no such help coming, because Snyder has made it clear that the next move belongs to the fans.
