‘How was I supposed to know there was a feud?’: Chad Michael Murray on Hilary Duff Crashing Lindsay Lohan’s 'Freaky Friday' Premiere

The early 2000s were filled with headline-making celebrity moments, many of which blurred the line between teenage impulsiveness and full-blown Hollywood drama. For actors like Chad Michael Murray, who found themselves working alongside some of the biggest young stars of the time, even seemingly casual decisions could end up tied to much larger narratives.
Back then, social media was not around to amplify every move in real time, yet certain stories still managed to stick, often evolving long after the moment had passed. Now, years later, Murray has thrown light on one such incident involving Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan, offering his perspective on a rumored feud he did not even realize he was part of.

Chad Michael Murray reflects on an invite that led to unexpected drama
Chad Michael Murray is now looking back at the situation with a sense of confusion rather than controversy. Speaking during a recent appearance on Virgin Radio Toronto’s Daryn & Deepa Mornings, the actor admitted he had no idea he was stepping into the middle of a rumored feud between Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff when he invited Hilary Duff to the Freaky Friday premiere in 2003.
“How was I supposed to know there was a feud? I found out quickly after,” he revealed.
“We were filming and we had a big kissing sequence coming, and they wanted our characters to kind of get to know each other and so we started spending time together, it was great. She’s super sweet,” the actor revealed, explaining the events that led to the feud-fuelling premiere.
At the time, Chad Michael Murray was juggling projects that connected him to both Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan, playing love interests in Freaky Friday and A Cinderella Story. From his perspective, inviting Hilary Duff felt natural, just two co-stars spending time together. It was not until later that he realized the appearance had been interpreted as something far more dramatic.
But while Chad Michael Murray remained unaware, Hilary Duff herself has since confirmed her actual intentions behind that memorable night.
Hilary Duff admitted she ‘absolutely’ crashed the premiere
During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Hilary Duff addressed a long-standing rumor tied to the August 2003 premiere of Freaky Friday. Reflecting on the moment amid her press tour for her album 'Luck… or something', Hilary Duff did not hold back.
“I think absolutely yes,” Hilary Duff said when asked if she intentionally crashed the event, supporting her argument with the fact that she was then only about 16 years old.
At the time, Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan were frequently linked in tabloid headlines, partly due to their rumored love triangle with Aaron Carter. Their alleged rivalry made them constant targets of paparazzi, turning even casual appearances into headline-worthy moments. Hilary Duff also revealed that the tension between the two stars did not linger as long as fans might think.
Looking back, she described the situation as more of a “childhood feud” than anything deeply serious.

“I mean, that was like my childhood feud, like my nemesis, it’s so many years later, like who cares?” she shared. She even recalled a later encounter where Lindsay Lohan approached her directly: “Are we good?”—to which Duff responded, “We’re good,” before the two shared a drink together.
Interestingly, Hilary Duff, who marked her musical comeback after a decade, was not surprised when Lindsay Lohan later showed up at the premiere of her own film, Cheaper by the Dozen, suggesting that the back-and-forth may have been part of a mutual, if unspoken, understanding at the time, and this time, with Chad Michael Murray's invites
