Hollywood abounds with famous nickname traditions where industry legends earn affectionate monikers reflecting their status and relationships. Robert De Niro’s “Bob” carries its own charm, especially for actors meeting the two-time Oscar winner for the first time.

Skyler Gisondo recently discovered just how difficult that simple transition could feel. While filming Focker-In-Law, the actor spent his first week addressing De Niro formally before finally finding the courage to call him “Bob.”

Gisondo has now explained why he needed an entire week to make that leap.

Skyler Gisondo discussed working with De Niro during his recent Happy Sad Confused podcast appearance, recalling the nerves he felt while figuring out how to address his legendary co-star.

“The first week of filming went by like Monday, Tuesday, and I am saying, ‘Good morning, Mr. De Niro,’” Gisondo explained. He gradually sensed that De Niro preferred a more relaxed dynamic, although the actor never directly told him to drop the formal title. That left Gisondo facing an unexpectedly awkward decision.

He eventually created a plan that would give him some breathing room if the interaction went badly.

“I was nervous to call him Bob, so I made a game plan,” Gisondo recalled. He decided Friday was the right moment because the weekend would provide some recovery time if his attempt failed.

After filming wrapped, Gisondo caught up with De Niro and finally made the switch. “All right, bye. Thank you for a great week, man,” he told him. Gisondo believed he noticed a small reaction from De Niro that suggested the veteran actor appreciated the gesture.

That brief exchange happened while the two actors were working on a new chapter of the Meet the Parents franchise.
