Ethan Hawke revealed he lost his shot at Titanic because he simply talked too much. The actor auditioned for James Cameron's romantic epic opposite Kate Winslet before Leonardo DiCaprio took the helm. Hawke survived multiple rounds of casting and even got a screen test, which, in Hollywood terms, means he got very close to securing the role.

However, the nervousness of stepping into such a historic project led him to apparently bleed the director's ear off.

Ethan Hawke, during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, shared being incredibly hyped about making it to the final screen test round with James Cameron and Kate Winslet. And instead of letting his acting do the talking, his big mouth took over and he just could not shut up thereafter.

"I completely blew it..because I couldn't shut up," confessed Hawke.

Hawke shared on the talk show that he went on and on about envisioning Titanic as a massive cinematic event on par with classic 1970s movies like The Towering Inferno, effectively talking himself right out of the role. He could practically hear his inner voice telling him to shut up, but by then, it was too late. Nonetheless, Hawke has no regrets losing the role to Leonardo DiCaprio.

While Ethan Hawke talked his way out of the room, Leonardo DiCaprio did the exact opposite.

Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly walked into his Titanic audition with more than a little star power. When James Cameron asked him to read opposite Kate Winslet, he bluntly responded, “Oh, I don’t read.” At the time, DiCaprio had just come off Romeo + Juliet and apparently felt he was too established to audition in the conventional way.

Once DiCaprio realized he could actually lose the part, he reluctantly agreed to audition. But as soon as Cameron shouted 'Action,' the attitude was gone. In an instant, he became Jack Dawson. Cameron later recalled seeing a “ray of sun” come down and light up Jack. As Ethan Hawke himself mused, the cinema gods had always intended the role for DiCaprio.
