Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan became one of The Walking Dead franchise’s most memorable figures, transforming from a terrifying antagonist into a complicated survivor with humor, regret, and unexpected vulnerability. His presence gave the long-running universe a powerful source of tension while creating fresh emotional stakes for Maggie and Hershel.

Yet after years inside Negan’s story, Morgan has now revealed how close he came to walking away for good once.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan revealed on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that he seriously considered leaving The Walking Dead: Dead City after its second season. Reflecting on the character’s direction, Morgan said:

“All I did was cry, and he’d lost his charisma and everything that made him Negan.” The frustration became serious enough for him to contact AMC after filming wrapped. His message to the network was blunt: “I can’t do it like this anymore.”

Morgan explained on the podcast that he rarely makes calls like that, which made his decision to speak directly with AMC especially significant. Rather than simply accepting his concerns, AMC executive Dan McDermott encouraged him to consider whether Negan’s story could be changed before Morgan made a final decision.

“Before you run off, Jeff, is there a way we can shift this?” McDermott asked him as he shared. 

That conversation eventually opened the door to a different approach. Morgan said Lauren Cohan was also part of the discussions, with the actor feeling that the Maggie and Negan dynamic had become too limited. He wanted the relationship to develop beyond Maggie seeking revenge while Negan focused on surviving and protecting her son, Hershel.

That willingness to fight for the character is especially striking, given how uncertain Morgan’s own acting career once looked.

Years before becoming Negan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was struggling to establish himself as an actor. During the same Happy Sad Confused conversation, Morgan recalled that his longtime manager dropped him when he was in his mid-30s, telling him that he had “aged out” of the industry.

Then, within roughly a week, Morgan received calls about three major television opportunities. He landed Denny Duquette on Grey’s Anatomy, John Winchester on Supernatural, and a role on Weeds. The role of Denny proved particularly important. Morgan described the storyline as “lightning in a bottle” and credited Grey’s Anatomy with changing the trajectory of his career. 

That career turnaround eventually led Morgan to some of his most recognizable roles, including Negan in The Walking Dead universe. Today, fans also frequently suggest him for the role of Arthur Morgan if Red Dead Redemption 2 ever receives a live-action adaptation, although there is no announced movie based on the game.
