There was never a dull moment with Jim Carrey. The actor was practically a human cartoon squeezed into a tailored suit. Whether he was driving makeup artists up the wall or leaving his co-stars in fits of uncontrollable laughter, being on set with Carrey was never just about watching an actor deliver his lines. He was an unpredictable force of nature. For many of his co-stars, working with Carrey meant constantly fighting the urge to break character because of his outrageous physical comedy. And despite all, they praised the actor's genuine warmth and kindness. Tommy Lee Jones, however, was not one of them.

Jones famously confronted the actor with a stern warning about taking his antics too far.

Tommy Lee Jones did not enjoy working with Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones worked together in the 1995 film, Batman Forever. During an appearance on Norm Macdonald Live, Carrey revealed that Jones was not a fan of Carrey and his personality on-set. Carrey remembered walking up to Jones at a posh restaurant the night before a big shoot. The actor was dining alone, so Carrey tried to make conversation and pulled up a chair. But Jones' reaction was anything but welcoming. He turned pale, visibly trembled with anger, and gave Carrey a tense hug.

"‘I hate you. I really don’t like you.‘ And I said, ‘Gee, man, what’s the problem?’ And I pulled up a chair, which probably wasn’t smart, and he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery,'” Carrey recalled the interaction. Jones's aversion to Carrey was not entirely without reason.

According to director Joel Schumacher and Hollywood insiders, Jones was pissed for a few specific reasons.

The infamous Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey rivalry

According to Jim Carrey, the bad blood may have started before the two even began filming Batman Forever. Tommy Lee Jones had just starred in Cobb (1994), a serious biopic about baseball legend Ty Cobb, while Carrey's goofy comedy Dumb and Dumber was enjoying a much bigger box-office run. Carrey wondered whether that lopsided result had something to do with Jones's apparent resentment. Director Joel Schumacher later suggested that Jones felt overshadowed by Carrey's larger-than-life presence.

"Tommy is, and I say this with great respect, a scene stealer. Well, you can't steal the scene from Jim Carrey. It's impossible. And, I think it irked Tommy," Schumacher told Vulture.

Jones reportedly had little patience for Carrey's chaotic, rubber-faced brand of comedy and his habit of improvising on the fly. Their contrasting sensibilities reportedly created friction, which became particularly apparent when the two met at the restaurant.
